this pic is what was done down at the mini meet this month
Attachment 31887 and once I got home I went a little farther and so far from the road tests it stays alot cooler in there now :D Attachment 31888 Attachment 31889 I left a spot non taped as to be able to open the lid if need be Attachment 31890 Attachment 31891 Its completely enclosed for now and I added a little redneck cold air hose to help it stay cool Attachment 31892 Attachment 31893 the hose runs up right behind the light just to give it a little extra air sometime in the future im going to build a rigid box but for now this seems to work.. what do you think? |
That looks nice. Very close to how mines set up.
|
Looks good. Gotta ask... I see the insulation everywhere, is that something thats available at Lowes or the typical home hardware store?
Also, what stops any water from going in that intake tube under the bumper? Not that it'd be enough to affect operation of the vehicle, but if you hit a big enough puddle.... I'm thinking of extending a hose from my airbox just so it has some cool air to breathe. FWI isn't in the budget... |
the insulation is reflectix from the depot with aluminum tape covering it, the tube isnt attatched to my box it just helps to get colder air into that area :D
|
Ah good deal. Thanks.
|
That tubing underneath looks strangely familiar. ;)
Glad it got put back to good use. It served Zilla well. :D |
the legacy will live on bill
|
so im thinking of taking the silver stuff out and replacing it with an acrylic box ( like on willwrens sleeper ) but im gonna coat it with wrinkle finish . just wondering if I should build it big enough for the reflectix to stay inside of it or if the coated acrylic (plexi) would keep it cool enough without it.. any suggestions? I gotta get this done before I go under the knife
|
Box with the reflectex in it would be rigid, strong, and very good. Just make a cardboard and tape template to get the basic shape of what you want, then cut it apart and use those pieces as the template for the acrylic/plexi.

well had some time yesterday and this is what I did : first relocated my pcm then on to my new box( mind you this was all done with just my left hand and I'm right handed)
cut the acrylic ( heavy duty this time) and wrinkle finished it hinges too this was all done with a razorblade a very low powered dremmel and a cheap drill Attachment 31391 Attachment 31392 Attachment 31393 starting the build :) Attachment 31394 Attachment 31395 Attachment 31396 put hinges on the top for easy access used clips for the sides Attachment 31397 Attachment 31398 Attachment 31399 Attachment 31400 Attachment 31401 Attachment 31402 Attachment 31403 Attachment 31404 Attachment 31405 now my wife is going to paint something on the top of the box, haven't decided what yet maybe the Pontiac dart or the cars name? ( which it still doesn't have one  ) |
Very nice!
Id go for the dart. |
Looks great. I would go with the dart as well
|
Very nice.
|
well my wife is drawing it up and I think im going to have my cousin who is in the screenprinting business print out some decals of it and put that on there :D
|
that looks nice
|
Good job on the Cool Box. That not only looks good but will be effective..... as long as you keep the car moving and don't stop and idle too long.
:D |
What has this done for your car in terms of mileage? Increase, decrease, nothing? If increase or decrease by how much approx?
|
that looks great

Remember that an engine is just an air pump. Reduce the restrictions on either end with gain more power and better efficiency and efficiency = mileage.
and ...... 1% hp gain for every 10 F drop in intake temperature. ;) |
since black absorbes heat try painting the box white since that disipates heat it should help a lil bit more
|
A little off-base. That's the same coating I use to dissipate heat on the superchargers I rebuild. It's wrinkled to increase surface area.
A black car will COOL faster than a white car as well as heat up but ONLY if it's allowed to absorb heat. His has airflow over it constantly. Google the 'black body' theory. |
Will, I had only asked this question one time and your answer of "1-2 mpg under the right conditions" was the only answer that I got. I just wanted to get some other oppinions of what other peoples mods had done for them. Also no one else has answered the question, but you, so there is no "we" telling me anything. But Thanks.
|
will is correct in saying 1-2 miles in optimum conditions... he happens to know quite a bit about these cars. and in my opinion his word is gold. and im sure its hard to tell for anyone with an intake as the acceleration is so much better its hard not to be into the gas
|
tpulliam79, thank you for your response. that's all i wanted to know. Thanks.
|
Jarod, Tpulliam was at a meet at my place last month. I sent him home with 4mpg better than what he came down with. His drive down was primarily downhill, and in spite of the uphill drive home, he still got better mileage. Half that was probably the intake he installed while he was here. Primarily because he took the time to insulate it at least temporarily at that time.

Bill...Taylor and I were racking our heads the other day when we worked on my car. On the '94, it has these little "side boxes" coming off of the air duct, WTF??? Is it not the correct understanding that a straight flow is best, why these empty boxes? Just a question. Will get pics posted if you need to see what I am talking about. Also, what exactly are you guys referring to with the "gutted air box" talk. What is gutted...want the CAI from i think Intense, but can't afford. (I like the looks of it, as well as want the improved MPG) Thanks. ~Brandon~

The little "box" on the intake tube is a whine baffle, along with the ones on the intake snout of the air filter box. They were put there to quiet down the whine, as when buyers bought these cars new, they didn't want to hear the whine as it was sold as a sport luxury sedan. Now on the other hand, we love to rip that crap off to hear the lovely whine of the M62. 8)
Works the same way on alot of cars. My Dad's Durango had a huge baffle box to quiet down the roar at WOT, but that changed when we put a intake on. 8) |
My 95 had the same resonators on the intake as your 94. Note I said HAD.
|
hmm...quiet it down??? Oh hell yes they are coming out!!!! lol
Thanks guys :D |
There are some that would tell you that the resonation chambers are installed on the intake box to tune the intake for additional power. There were none of these on my OEM box.
Theory having something to do with energy pulses. :? Elimination of them on new models could have been a cost saving measure by GM :?: I love the whine..........almost as much as the wine here. :alcoholic: My vote is rip it off and enjoy the sound and freer restriction. ;) |
