Could it be possible to use a 3x00 short block with the heads, intake, accessories, oil pan, sensors, and transmission for the fiero 2.8 v6? It seems to me if you could do that, the wiring wouldn't need as much changing, maybe need the ecm retuned a bit. You could retain the original look that way as well. This might be a far-fetched idea though.
I can tell you for sure that the 2.8 and the 3.1 have the same bore, but the stroke goes from 76mm to 84mm.
Everybody is right about upgrading to the 3x00 engines though. They are relatively cheap and plentiful. They drop in relatively easily too. You would not be able to run it with your fiero engine harness though since the old 2.8s used distributors. For me that would be a swap killer right there.
I have seen a couple of fiero'* that got the 3.1 turbo swap. If you could get a hold of one of those guys, they could tell you how they did the firewall connector and made the turbo harness work. Honestly, I cant think of anything more fun than a turbo fiero!

a non-VVT 3500 from a malibu is ATM, one of the cheapest per HP almost-drop-in motors for anything that came with a 60V6 from the factory(with plenty of potential for more too with proper exhaust design). the stock fiero ECM isn't that great IMO, and only pushes out a 160 baud datastream, so tuning becomes much more of a guessing game than intelligent decisions based on known data.
there are people who have swapped in 1227730s(found in almost anything with a 660 since 1987 with the exception of w-bodies, fieros and 87-89 f-cars, possibly a few more) using the factory harness IIRC, and likely chopped the connectors off for the distributor and wired in the 60V6 DIS wastespark system. the pennocks(?) forum(fiero.nl IIRC) has MANY people who have done this, along with quite a few members on 60V6.

If you do a nonvvt3500, you have to get a external crank trigger to make it work. Available at wot-tech.com

Which BTW, was my original plans for my turbo grand prix... a turbo 3500 will be ultimate pwnage. It is the easiest/cheapest power upgrade with only little things to have to worry about, like throttle linkage, exhaust plumbing, ect... and not have to worry about building a ecm to run it, because with the external crank trigger, the stock TGP harness and computer will run it.
