Has anybody here tried & succeeded in switching coil packs & ign modules from a single coil set up to a three coil set up? I've got Series II ignition parts here & was thinking of using them on my Series I.

I would think it would be fairly easy. I think they switched to 3 coils in 1993 on the series 1, because our '92 Olds 88 had 1 coil (that needed to be replaced every 40k), and our '93 Olds 88 has 3 coils. I would think if you bought the stuff for the '93 Bonneville (assuming the '93 bonnes had it) you could probably put it right in.

Well I've got this complete harness for my 96 Series II sitting while the engine needs to be rebuilt (my other project) & was thinking it would look good in my 92 SE. I was just wondering if it would just bolt in & hook up w/o any ill effects? I've haven't actually counted the pins & looked at the connection harness yet to see if they're completely compatable with one another though. Just wondered if someone has actually swapped this ignition set up yet & how it worked before I tried it out. I only have one car now, so if something goes wrong, I'm out of transportation.

According to www.car-part.com (they use the Hollander manual for cross-referencing) and the coils packs can be used on many 4, 6, & 8 cylender GM engines from 1991-2002. You should be able to use the ignition also because my sister had to have her ignition changed on her 1995 Riviera (series 1 supercharged) and when they gave me the ignition it said it was off a 1998 Grand Prix 3800 and it worked.
Back when I was driving my 1992 SE I replaced the ignition with a salvage yard unit and when I went to pick it up they asked if I had the single coil or the 3 seperate coil packs. I had the 3 seperate coil packs on my 1992 so this makes me think you should be ok.
Anyhow let us know how it goes.

Well went out & tore apart my connector to the ignition module on my SE & compared it to the Series II one I've got. This is what I found:
My present Magnavox system (one large coil) goes like this:

While the AC Delco/Remy System (3 coils) goes like this:

K

P

In other words NO SPACE! on the AC Delco/Remy system.....
My question is what is the "K" terminal for??? My manual doesn't list a "K" terminal in it'* description, but does show one in it'* diagram! :?
All other terminals are EXACTLY the same & have the EXACT same wiring codes.

Well after a very long time tearing apart my wiring harness for my Series II, this is what I've now found. Terminal "K" above in the AC Delco/Remy System is actually a single seperate GROUND wire with eyelet! So if everything else is the same, we should be able to swap back & forth between these two Ignition Systems without trouble, right? Since it'* too dark outside right now to do an actual trial, it'll have to wait to tomorrow to find out if my synopsis is correct!

Can someone with a Series II AC Delco/Remy System (3 coils) look to see that this Single wire with an eyelet is indeed a GROUND wire????

The new vortec engines have coil for every cylinder. and a short wire, not sure how hard it would be to rige somthing like that up, or call jegs maybe..

Well I've done it folks! Since no-one else was willing to help me out, I decided to swap the entire Ignition Module & Coils from my Series II to my Series I. I now run the Delco/Remy (3 Coil) Ignition System instead of my previous Magnavox (1 Coil) Ignition System. BTW, it started straight up without any problems or codes. Only goes to prove that you can now swap these two Ignition Systems back & forth afterall. Now I can upgrade these coils to the MSD Coils!

No "Theory" needed! You can now stop "thinking" about & just do it! The entire swap took me less than twenty minutes too.
