Default Service Vehicle Soon light

This might be a really dumb question but when I have my key in the "ON" position (without starting the car) the "Service Vehicle Soon" warning light is on. But when I start my car, it shuts off. Is this supposed to happen? lol 2000 Olds Alero 3.4L

As long as it cuts off as soon as the car starts running there is no need to worry, if it comes on, or starts flashing while you are driving it, then pull over immediately, and have it scanned for codes, do not drive it again till whatever the issue is gets resolved.

That is your way to determine the CEL bulb is still working, and is normal. Not an indication of a problem.

Big difference between Service Vehicle Soon and Service Engine Soon(CE light).....

Service Engine Soon means you have a potential driveability/emission problem.....

Service Vehicle Soon is usually associated with auto headlights/DRL problem, which is usually a bulb that is out.....

Good catch Tech II, I read that one wrong.

With my 96' Park Ave I have auto headlights, and have had a headlight out before, but I have never seen a Service Vehicle light come on, I guess that feature was not on my car since it is a bit older.

Either way if the light cuts out after the car starts, there is no need to worry.

Ok lol just making sure. I was kind of curious because when I turn the key to 'On' all the warning lights light up for a second. But then they all go out except the Service Vehicle Soon, air bag, and seat belt. But once I start the car, everything goes out.
