shipping a LX5 3.5l engine "shortstar"
hi all,
I have a LX5 engine I am going to ship. It is from a 3.5l 2002 oldsmobile intrigue.
Can anyone help with what weight it would be? I know it all is going to depend on what i leave on the engine but I just need some idea to start off my estimation.
anyone know what the shortblock would weigh?
I am actually shipping it will exhaust/intake manifolds, alternator, mounts, computer and wire harnesses, etc. but not the A/C compressor though.
also if I choose to ship the transmission too, any guesses what would that add? 100 lbs?

A quick search with The Google tells me that a long block Shortstar is 369 pounds. You'd have to add for any accessories etc. From your list of accessories etc. above I'd add 150 pounds.
A 4T65E is about 175 pounds without fluid.

ABF, Conway etc tend to be cheaper because they are dock to dock delivery. Might take a day or two longer, but cheaper.

Also, pay attention if the departure and/or delivery points have the capability to forklift the shipment into/out of the back of the truck. If one or both don't, then you'll need to set up liftgate service respectively.

thanks guys, I'll need residential to residential pickup/delivery and probably lift gate too. I found a great price, I think, with YRC, thanks CathedralCub for that recommendation!
I am shipping from Northern, NJ to San Diego,CA for just over $300 with YRC. (ill drain all the fluids etc)
also,
I have heard people complain about shipping an engine resting on the oil pan and say the exhaust manifold. I have no real reason to think this would be a problem, but want to get your opinions too ?

Seems good to me for that weight, especially with liftgates at each end.
All, wondering if we have concerns about the oil pump priming after a week or two in the back of a truck with the pan drained . . . ?
That seems like a lot of weight sitting on the pan, PLUS, it'* going to be a rough ride for 2,800 miles. I'd be mostly worried about the pan, but also worried about the weight of the engine concentrated in such a small area crushing whatever it is sitting on. Depending on how you are securing it, crushing its way down will also loosen any straps/bands/etc. that would be holding it upright. You should also protect it from things falling on it as well as side strikes.
Remember: It will be changing trailers along the way at least twice. It will need to survive these changes with whatever yahoos are running the forklifts/pallet jacks/maglevs/etc. then possibly get strapped in all different ways if it gets strapped at all.
My $0.02 : At least build something that has a frame of 2x4'* surrounding it, and put the engine on an old tire or two depending on dimensions of the tires and how well they support it. Then lots of straps or bands.
I've had some populated server racks arrive at customer sites looking like they were dumped upside-down off the truck and filled with water along the way. The best explanation we can ever get is "a discrepancy was noted at [name the depot]" . Our stuff was insured and replacable, your LX5 probably isn't as replaceable if they damage stuff that the recipient is expecting.
