R & R power steering pump in 95 Olds 88
 

Folks , besides the fact that I'm new at least to here , I need some help . I inherited a 1995 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with a 3800 engine that the power steering pump has failed on . It was due to a Belt tensioner that went to the great beyond. I was able to scrape the mega money for that . However, I'm on a fixed income and I need to replace the pump too. Pictures are helpful .

Now if anyone here needs help with the older Oldsmobile models like back in the 50'sto 80's please feel free to P- M me !

I never did a write up on a pump replacement. But it's really not that hard.

Remove the belt
Unhook the 2 lines
Remove the two bolts holding pump on. They are at 12 and 6. You will need a 13mm I believe it is, or was that 10mm, deep well socket. The pulley has holes in it that the socket will fit threw. Pump comes right out.

What's wrong with the pump? And, was the pump the cause of the belt failure?

My reason for asking is, the pump in our '96 Delta whine's sometimes, and I'm wondering if the pump is failing, or if there's another problem, such as a failing steering rack.

Well to start, the tensioner assy broke and in getting the car off the road , I guess I drove it maybe a mikle to a safe spot . At first glance , I thought I had just lost the pulley as it was laying next to the shock tower. .No such luck. I discovered the tensioner was at fault when I finially figgured out how to take the Serpentine belt off. I then discovered the pump was losing fluid . I saw ATF draining out of the housing itself . Oh well, this time of year an with my Arthritis , laying on the ground trying avoid another 400.00 repair .

I can relate. It's not as if there's a whole lot of room to work on anything that has anything to do with the belt.
And, having the old fingers cramp up just as that impossible to get at bolt is about started, well... that situation has been the cause of more than a few choice words being let loose.

You should be able to get the pump off from the top. No need to go under the car. May need to pull the coolant tank, that may give you a bit more room.

No , for the record , if you're new to one of these engines , the 95 3800 has its pump located at the rear and near the bottom . Yep, they're held in place by 13mm bolts . You find BOTH of these guys THROUH the pulley . As to a Haynes Manual, I'm not going to comment !!!!!!!!
