Default Olds Achieva 2.4L no start issue

My son'* 97 olds achieva 2.4L is killing me, I swear!!!
It'* had a random no start issue that has been progressively getting worse. When it starts, it'll run fine for a day or 2.
When it won't start it turns over just fine, sometimes will catch and sputter for a second, then dies. A bit of white smoke from the tailpipe tells me that it is getting fuel and might be flooding?
Ignition parts all check out OK. I haven't tried jumpers to the plugs to see if they are firing though.
Fuel system pressures up to 45-47 psi and pump is buzzing along as it should.
I changed the water pump when he first got the car and lined all the timing set up correctly.
I'm at my wits end. Anyone have any ideas before it goes to the expensive mechanic???
Thanks.

only thing i can think of is crank position sensor or its wiring/connector. although normally its heat related no start, but if the wiring is loose or the connector was intermittent it would do as your saying. other thing might be security, if it has the light when it wont start?

When it won't start, see if you are getting spark. If you aren't, the crank shaft position sensor would be a good place to start.
