Olds 98, 3800 Supercharged

Have to do my water pump tomorrow on 1994 Olds 98 Regency Elite, just wondering what these elbows people are talking about are, heard from a friend awhile back that some kind of plastic piece breaks off and makes thermostat stick open or closed. Also any advice on doing this pump?
