Default 95 olds 88 transmission help needed

Hey everybody, Mainly been a lurker here (for knowledge'* sake); but really need some help, now. I'm very mechanically inclined and in the past, have always done all of the work on our vehicles. Unfortunately, that never included any major transmission work, so I am sure hoping that you all will permit me to pick your brains a bit. Financial constraints keep me from having a shop look at it; and physical constraints keep me from doing too much at any one time (hurt my back in a fall a few years ago). Okay, enough about me, now for the car.
1995 Olds 88, 3.8, 65E tranny, 201,xxx miles. For the past few months the tranny would have sporadic spells when we would place it in gear and have to rev the engine slightly for about 30 seconds before it would grab into gear. Other times it would engage as expected with no issues. This past Monday morning as I left the house to take my daughter to school, the tranny engaged well and went thru the gears with no problems, until about 1/2 mile down the road, when the tranny suddenly disengaged. Pulled off at the end of a driveway, would not engage in any forward gear, nor reverse. I returned to the car about an hour later, checked the fluid, then pulled it the 3/4 miles back home. I began by checking and repairing the vacuum lines ( a few were dry rotted, brittle, cracked). Still no go. So yesterday, replaced the fluid and filter. Fluid dill not smell or look burnt, no metal debris; but, there was a piece of a thrust washer. Found the remainder of the thrust washer at the engine side of the tranny, after I removed the filter. I dumped about a pint of fluid out of the filter, so it would seem that it was pretty well clogged. But, still no success. Any ideas on what to do to get this thing going again, even if only for a couple of months?
I attempted to pull codes with a gm code reader (the one that is basically a jumper), but didn't get any codes. Also, don't know if this is connected or not, but last a couple of days before the tranny went kaput, the car suddenly started sounding like a chevette or pinto. I checked the exhaust and found only a very tiny hole in the muffler, nothing large enough to cause the sound. I probably should also add that the car idles fine, idle increases when put into reverse, drops slightly when put into any of the forward gears; if my thinking is correct, the engine computer thinks that the tranny is working properly.
All help is greatly appreciated.
Tim

Dan, Thanks. I didn't even think to look in the tech info. I'm thinking that it'* highly unlikely that the reverse and the drive servos with both fail at the same time. So, that leaves the; main line pressure, drive link, input clutch, input and reaction carrier, torque converter, pump...
So, what would be the most likely suspect; and what would be the next step that you would take, if you were in my shoes?

Test the oil pressure, not sure where that is on your trans. If you have pressure you rule out the oil pump. I would be looking at the input clutch piston. This would effect all gears.

Thanks again Dan. I hate to sound like an absolute idiot, but can the input clutch piston be accessed from the underside, and what would I be looking at purchasing? It'* kinda funny, I've rebuilt the bottom end of a motor with the motor still in the car; and this tranny is making me feel totally stupid. Thanks for your patience.

SGP358 should be able to answer that better.

I'm guessing, but it sure seems as though the Clutch pack has gone bye bye . At least this has been my experence with automatic transmissions .

The clutch pack should still have some slip. But if the input band is not engaging, you will have nothing. This can be the band is broken, has come off the pin, or the piston is not moving due to it being stuck or blown O ring.
