96 Olds Ninty Eight Ac Compressor Not Engage
I have a 1996 Oldsmobile model Nintyeight V6 3.8. The airconditioner is not working. I have checked all fuses under car, as well as underhood of car at firewall. I have replaced Ac Relay as well. There is no Power to the Ac Compressor Clutch assy to engage the AC Compressor. I have checked all wiring and it is good. From inside the vehicle all Air-conditioning Lights are lit up when ac button is engaged. The bottom line is that there is no power getting to the Ac Compressor when activated normally. I have bench tested the compressor and I can send power from a Battery charger to the compressor and it does engage. From inside the car I activated the Ac , the Ac light came on, but there was no measurable voltage at the unhooked Ac Compresor connector.

If you hook the car up to a code scanner, do you get any codes at all? I am curious how much of a charge the system has. Did it quit working suddenly, or did you just try it after winter, and got nothing? It is not firing the compressor for a reason, and we need to determine the reason before we try running it again.

The only thing the PCM can see is, if the system has enough pressure in it to turn the compressor on. No pressure, the clutch won't engage.
Best to take this to a shop that can hook up A/C gauges to your A/C system. They can tell you if your refrigerant is low or not.

This issue has been resolved. I read the other thread and it talked about freon being low, as well as jumping the ac compressor to charge it.
I went and bought some freon 134A with gauge,
I jumped the AC Compressor directly to the battery, so it would run while adding freon
I set Ac Controls to High
When starting the procedure It was no noted tthat there was no pressure at all meaning no freon.
*Note Prior to this failure the AC was working but barley out putting any cold air
Started to add freon and after 15 minutes the Can was empty (I used the large can of 134a freon)
Stopped the engine
Re hooked up the compressor to the factory power connector.
Restarted car and the AC Compressor engaged on its own, and I have nice cold air.

That is great, I hope this is the end of the story, but I also know, it was empty for a reason, and you may find out why in very short order. The system will only lose pressure when there is a leak. Did the refrigerant can have a UV dye in it also?

You were right, I lost all freon by the next day.
Again the compressor doesn't move, but at least I understand why.
I need to track down where and why it leaked out. I have limited funds, and I would like to figure this out without paying an arm and leg.
Do you have ideas on how to track down the leak.
Also I noticed that after it was charged, and when the engine was turned off I heard a hiss from the compressor releasing pressure. It did this noise for approximately 20 seconds. Is this normal, or is this where I am loosing freon?
Again the compressor doesn't move, but at least I understand why.
