How hard would it be to take off cv joints?
 

Both of my front cv joints are torn and my car makes a woo woo woo woo noise. You can hear it when the car moving in on the track in this video.

Its made the noise ever since ive had the car but has gotten worse. This is a cv joint right?

How hard is it to replace them? What do i need to do?

Not to be OT (off topic) but your Olds pic sure reminds me of mine. only difference is the wheels.

That whoo whoo sound, can you hear it only at certain speeds? Wheel hub COULD be the problem also, our higher mileage Bonneville has done that since we got it, and I have drove it almost 100k that way, never gotten any worse. Tire shop told us it could be a hub wearing out, but they have never condemmed it yet LOL.

Now my OTHER one, for SURE is making a hub noise. I plan to dig deeper into it this weekend to see which one it is.

Is it a high frequency occasional, kinda bed/chairspring squeak?

CV boot replacement can be done and is more of a pain than the difference in price to a new axle is worth IMO.

It gets pretty loud at 30ish but you can hear it all the time while driving. I had a mechanic look at it and he shook the wheel while it was on a lift but he said it didn't have any play in it whatever that means. He sujjested it was the cv's but i donno. I know that the boots are both ripped and spilling fluid. I'm trying to upload a video of me driving around 30. You can hear it so loud it shakes the a pillars. I would really like to like this one because it has been with me ever since ive had the car.

Rebuilt drive axles (half-shafts) can usually be had for about $60 with a lifetime replacement warranty. Hold onto the receipt. Most of the rebuilts I have installed don't last as long as the original axle. When you change the axles, it helps to use a lever-type tool to split the ball joint apart so that you don't damage the grease cup or boot that holds in the grease and keeps out dirt and water. Just like your axles, once the boot is torn, it won't be long before dirt and water will enter the joint and cause it to fail.

Although your sound could be from a bad wheel bearing (hub), because your boots are torn on the axles, I would start by replacing the axles and see if the sound goes away.

Like Boosty said, you can re-build each joint for about $20 ea, but it is not easy, takes a while, and is hardly worth it.
