Default Antifreeze leak from behind harmonic balancer?

I asked earlier on ideas on what would be causing an antifreeze leak but never got any responses on that so today I decide to remove a part of the plastic shielding on the passenger side to expose the harmonic balancer and a few other parts. So after I did that I started the car and crawled under it wit a very bright flash light and started to look for my antifreeze leak and I noticed it was leaking from behind the harmonic balancer. Can a car leak antifreeze from that area or not. Also I thought it was the new water pump that was leaking but it wasn't, also I replaced the all of the hoses when I replaced the water pump and checked them when I was under it so I was was able to eliminate all of that. The amount of antifreeze that is under the car all of the time from the leak if about a 3 inch wide puddle causing me to put a half a gallon of antifreeze in it about every month. So can a car leak antifreeze from behind the harmonic balancer or is it a run down affect. Thanks.

Joshua,
we have a G2500 series GMC van on which i recently had to replace a waterpump twice withing half a day. The reason was that i found that i had a leak dripping off of balancer. At first i though that i had messed up somewhere in gasket department, but them after carefully looking at a pump (after i cleaned it and dried it off lol), i saw that it leaks from literally a microscopic crack (defect). I swear ud look at the pump and will not see it but once its on it pushes green out of it like a blood would drip from a cut finger. That said, can a coolant come out from balancer seal area? everything is possible, depends on what u drive, what kind of construction does the cover have and how it interferes w/water pump.

sometimes however its neither but rather some hose that is mounted on top which would leak and give u that impression. If u were reffering to a 3.1 old, i am really not sure how it looks there, but would recommend u to first clean everything around the pump and balancer and then keep an eye on it. it comes from somewhere so u should be able to eventually find it.

I did clean around the water pump but I have a bad oil pan gasket so ounce I start the car oil starts leaking from everywhere I put a die in my antifreeze to help me pin point the problem so when I did that I noticed it behind the harmonic balancer but it could be running down from somewhere else though. I will half do more looking.

To answer your question, there is no coolant that can leak out the seals behind the harmonic balancer. It must be trickle down from something above it, so the most likely candidate would be the water pump.

Like I was saying it is not from the water pump or any of the hoses. I have already double checked the water pump to make sure and it isn't come from there. Also I had Auto Zone replace the water pump for the in case of and when I did that I also replace the gasket. So the other likely spot would be the front cover on the engine that may have a bad gasket in there but I don't have the time to tear into that because of the amount of work required to do that kind of job.

I would go to your local parts store and rent a cooling system pressure tester. You hook it up to where the rad cap goes and pump your system up to what the rad cap is rated for. You should observe a pressure drop as it leaks, and it should be easier to find the leak.

I had went in there and tightened up the front cover bolts and it helped allot on slowing down the leak. I also checked the lower intake manifold seal on that side and it isn't coming from there. So I am starting to wonder if I need to replace all the gaskets in the front cover but more then likely I will what and see what is all wrong with the motor in my car before I fix it. I will just keep putting antifreeze in it. I will wait till next year when taxes come in to get it to a good shop to see if the noise from my engine is bottom end or top end noise. I myself think it is a bottom end noise but not really for sure on that. After I get that info I will go from there on if I am going to fix it or junk the car.
