Lucas... watch the rpm and try to stay under 3,000.. excessive rpms is not good for extended periods of time.

Your car is coming out of TCC lockup or overdrive aka 4th gear?
Any symptoms before this happened?
Does it behave differently warm and cold?
Have you checked the level and condition of the tranmission fluid?

You really shouldn't go long at that speed without overdrive. You could be at aroung 2800-3500 rpm'* at that speed i think.

all right this is what i did
i took of with the gear selector in regular drive not over drive and i got the car up to 75 or 80 mph when i realized that the engine was whining a little high
i dont have a tach in my 1993 olds delta eighty eight(that is the car i am talking about)
any way

i look down and i was doing 75 not the norm
normally it is 55-65 so right then and there i new something was up so i turned down the radio and i realized that the motor was whining just a little bit more than normal
fyi my gear selector wire that tells me what gear i am in doesnt work
so i thought i was in overdrive
so i pulled over and kicked it up a gear(with the selector) and sure enough i wasnt in over drive i was in drive
so i got to thinking and i was driving for about 5 miles like that before i realized and
was wondering is that good or bad???? :?

Well, most likely you didn't do any real damage from what it sounds. However, as mentioned above, your engine prefers the mid range rpms for long life and service, lol.

Are we going to have to start calling you Rev? :P

You probably just blew some carbon out of the engine. If you were moving and the trans fluid is the same color it was you're okay.

I drove a Cutlass for about 15 miles in 2nd gear on the interstate when there were only 3 speeds. Trans fluid looked and smelled great. No problem.

not really cause the wire is so old and weak(both looking and actually weak)
that i wouldnt be suprised that it would break
but i highly doubt it will

i dont think it hurt anything
either cause the performance hasnt changed

however my girlfriend drove it today for 5 miles with the PARKING BRAKE ON

but that is another topic
