Default Nice Rack - Tie Rods Too

The pot holes took its toll on the front end of my Olds and when I went to get it aligned I was told that that the inner tie rods needed to be replaced. They wanted almost $500 to replace just the inner tie rod ends and the alignment. I told him I would think about it, brought the car home and crawled underneath to see if the inner tie rods really were worn. Well, they weren't lying to me, the inner tie rods did have plenty of movement. This is definitely not a job for the faint of heart, or me, for that matter. So I took it to another place I know and he quoted me a price of $625 which includes the inner AND outer tie rod ends PLUS repacing the Steering Rack(and the alignment). I always say that I want to keep this car just one more year but I'll probably be saying this 5 years from now. So I figure this is the best way to go. Has anyone else replaced their steering rack? I know that someone just replaced the inner tie rods but that job was a bear!

I guess the older racks had some issues with a nylon bush instead of the bronze that was used in the rebuilt racks. So to answer your question, yes we had a new rack put in our 86 LeSabre. Two years after Monroe put new inners after the struts because they called me and said I'd be wasting money on alignement. I went and they showed me the play so I had them do it. When the rack went bad my other mechanic told me they come with new inners and reman rack was not that expensive. I looked at it and did not want to tackle the job. Seems it cost me near/around 400. That was 6 years ago.
