Any recommendations for instrument cluster light bulbs for 91 Olds 88 Royale?
 

Hey gang! I am wondering if anyone could recommend some good, brighter replacement light bulbs for my instrument cluster? My cluster is the basic bare bones type with the front lit display which makes it hard to see at night even though all of the existing light bulbs still work. I did however replace the speedometer display with one from anotheran 87 Olds which had the gage cluster and the illuminated background display making it million times easier to see. But the fuel gauge and trip odometer have always been very difficult see in the 7+ years I have owned the car. So would any of those new style LED bulbs help any? I really appreciate any recommendations you guys may have!

If it has the 194 style bulbs in the cluster you can buy the LED bulbs at wal mart. Some of the smaller specialty bulbs are harder to find in LED and might require soldering bulbs to the existing bulb socket.

Back in the day on a previous vehicle I had this cluster configuration as well. Mine had green caps that went over the bulbs. I wanted to change it up so I pulled the caps off and switched the bulbs to red coated bulbs. Even so, reading the odometer wasn't a strong suit in this application, it always seemed washed out. I also kicked around the idea of going for UV lights for the dash lighting, and touching up the cluster with florescent paint. Never got around to it though.

Incandescent bulbs also dim over time, so I wonder if new bulbs alone may address the problem.

I have a handful of the little twist bulbs from the junk yard cluster that I have tested and they work but most of them seemed dim when I hooked them up to an old rechargeable power tool battery that I use to test various things. I know that there were some Oldsmobile 88's and 98's with the basic cluster from 1985 through 1989 that had the nice backlit display for both the speedo and the fuel gauge heads, which I have seen on ebay a couple times. Even though my speedometer section looks great since the swap, I would like to at least improve the visibilty of the fuel gauge. So I think I will try out some of those led 194 bulbs and see if that helps.

I finally around to trying out some LED bulbs for my dim fuel gage in my cluster and WOW! It is now more visible than before, making the old school bulbs look like a sorry excuse for light! I even decided to replace my dome light with an LED and difference is like night and day. I may just replace all of the bulbs inside the car now since I am amazed by how much they brighten things up. I have a photo of the cluster I took tonight on a test drive to try them out.
