Default 98 olds 88 won't start

One morning got in nd turn the key back so the accessories come on nd a minute later tried to start the key nd nothing happened..all the interior lights worked as normal as did the CD player but none of the dash lights came on. I then turned the key to the off position and tried to take the key out nd it wouldn't come out unless I locked the steering wheel! Has this ever happened happened to anyone nd any suggestion as to what may be the problem would be greatly appreciated

Thank for the advice but it turned out I needed a whole steering column!
I replaced the column now I have a new problem should be an easy fix...with the old column my alignment was straight now after replacing the column my wheel is slightly toward the left...I'm wondering if the wheel wasn't perfectly strighten doing install or is a front end alignment needed after replacing the column??

If the car does not pull to one side or to the other and the front tires are wearing evenly, just pop the wheel off and turn it one click.

I actually thought abt doing that but I was skeptical due to the warning sign abt improper of the clock spring. But thanks for the advice and I'll give it a try and update later

Anything turns more than lock to lock would probably cause some damage, but 1 tooth on the shaft shouldn't bother anything. Or, pay up the $80 for an alignment.
