96 cutlass ciera turn signal issue
 

My girlfriend has a 96 olds cultass ciera with a turn signal problem. Her passenger tail light housing had a crack in it and it let in a lot of water. The bottom bulb was completely submerged when her turn signal quit working. So we replaced the bulbs and I repaired the tail light housing to prevent further leaking. After that was done, her turn signal still does not work. When the lights are off and she hits the brakes, all the lights work. But when she turns her lights on(without hitting the brakes), the bottom bulb is fully illuminated as if she were hitting the brakes. The top bulb is normal. The turn signal still does not work and I'm at a loss. The driver side turn signal and hazards still work just fine. Checked the fuses and all the bulbs multiple times just to see if I was missing something. Could there be a connector issue with the bottom bulb since it was submerged for who knows how long? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Rust/corrosion in the socket? Wrong bulb?

As a test for the socket, remove the bulb from the socket, and shave the wires to the socket so that you can attach a test light to the bare wires(if you have a piercing test light, this is not necessary to shave the insulation)...now operate your lights and see if the test light acts accordingly....

The socket didnt look bad, but with 5lbs of dielectric grease in there from whomever put the last bulbs in, its hard to tell. I got the right bulbs for it. I'll try cleaning the socket out and try a different bulb and see what happens.

Does the other signal work? My Eighty-Eight had this issue with the passenger side lamp housing and it killed the flasher. Put some sealant on the edges of the plastic housing and bam, no more water. Replace the flasher if it burned out too.

Got it figured out. Whoever changed the bulbs last put so much dielectric grease in the socket that it wasn't getting good contact. After cleaning it out, it works like a champ.
