'91 88 Stalls In Traffic
 

Picked up a replacement for my Bonneville that got T-boned, a '91 Olds 88 with 88,000 miles. Car stalls out in traffic, and won't restart until it has cooled significantly. Any help would be appreciated, as I can't afford to randomly throw money at the problem. I've read some of the posts by folks with similar problems, and is there a way to determine if it's the coils, the crank position sensor, or something else? I brought it home Wednesday, it ran fine on a 50 mile drive. Took it out a little Wednesday evening, again no problem. Took it out for dinner with the Mrs. and the kids last night, and wound up riding a flatbed home. Died first after about 8 miles. Started up after a few minutes. Died again idling in a parking lot a few minutes later, again fired fairly soon. Died on the Interstate about ten miles later, started after a few minutes, then we made it to the Olive Garden. After dinner, it wouldn't start at all for about 20 minutes. It started, then dies again after a mile or so. Then we called the wrecker. Idles smoooth as silk, starts on one crank when not acting up.

First guess would be the crank sensor, when they fail they act up when hot. Try pouring cold water on it next time, if it starts, its the sensor.
Second guess would be a dirty ICM connector. My SSE did just that when it finally totally stalled on me while on the interstate. Removed the connector and cleaned it, tightened the prongs on the side of the road and all was good after that but I changed the ICM anyway.

Could anyone give me an idea as to where the crank position sensor is located?

Behind the harmonic balancer, which at the end of the crankshaft, the bottom most pulley on the engine.

Thanks for the info, Archon. I upgraded the Magnavox coil pack to a Delco 2 unit, which seems to have solved the stalling issue. It's giving me a SES light , which I thought might be the crank sensor. Turns out it's the Cam Position Sensor, rather than the Crank Sensor. Anyone know the specifics on replacing the cam sensor?
