1991 Oldsmobile 88 Royale Tune Up
 

Hello. I just brought a 1991 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight Royale. The car seem too run perfect and sound really good. I'm planning on getting a full tune up for it. What should I replace with the tune up? I got 176194 miles on it BTW.. I don't know what been done too this car yet,.

If it is running so good, why mess with it?

My idea of a full tuneup is:

Seafoam Treatment first,
If the engine has caked on oil and dirt, especially around the spark plug holes, then clean it.
Then:
Spark Plugs
Spark Plug Wires
Oxygen Sensor
PCV Valve
Clean MAF Sensor (they make a special spray for it that makes life easy)

If status is unknown, replace:
Air Filter
Fuel Filter

Check conditions of:
Coolant (Color and floaties)
Transmission Fluid (Color, smell, etc)
Brake Fluid (Color and floaties)
Power Steering Fluid (Color and floaties)

You planning on paying to have someone do this, or doing it yourself? If you are doing it, what is the extent of your automotive mechanical knowledge?

The reason I wanna get it a full tune up is because I don't know what the last owner really did too the car and either do he. Like I said, the car run perfect 95% of the time. Some times it will die after I let it warm up for awhile or die right after I start it.. I don't know what's the problem is with that.. but I'm thinking all it needs it a good tune up.

Someone is gonna tune up/fix the car at their shop. I can do simply stuff like change air filter, spark plugs and wires.. That's about it.

This my first car so I'm trying make it decent.

I would do all the above and also change the engine oil and filter, same with the transmission, flush and refill the cooling system, and renew the brake fluid, inspect the brakes thoroughly as well, and check the suspension joints and grease all points.
You might as well lube the locks and hinges while you're at it, in fact do every task in the service manual then you will have a base line for future maintenance.

PS: How is the seaform stuff. I heard great reviews about people using it. Do you guys think my car is too old for it now?

Never. Seafoam is used to clean carbon buildup from the engine. Most any car can suffer from it.

Once you get tuned up, top tier gas is your friend!
