Does anyone do Management?

Does anyone do Management?
I'm new to the management "scene" and wondered if anyone here had a few helpful tips. Granted this isn't a big business, but rather, a restaurant. I've only been managing for a few months now and have found that everyone knew me before as just one of the crew members. Now all of a sudden I'm their boss and they don't really seem to listen to me that much, or they don't take me seriously. What I've found is that These people have known me for years and knew me before I was asking (or telling) them to do things. I've also found that new hires take me seriously and do exactly what I ask of them without any questions ask. I'm always getting the questioning by the long-tiem employees that have known me. I don't think it helps that most of the employees are anywhere from 2-5 years older than me, either. I"ve had to resort to write-ups in many instances and the people go from getting along with me as a "friend" to being pissed off. Any insight? Is it really possible to be friends with people and be their boss? It seems hard to pull off? thanks.

LOL, You just have to let them know who'* boss
Or, If they're hardballers, Pull the sympathy gig. Say you don't have time to do it all and you're getting in deep because the owner knows what they're doing or something....

It is very tough to be "friends" and management at the same time. I mean you try to, but then they seem to walk all over you. It is a tough balance, I have been there, done that. It can be done to some point, but they do have to remember who is boss.

At work you have no friends...You have your neutral parties.....(co-workers) and then you have your management.....(your enemies)
Then you become manager......TRUST NO ONE

Custom..I've been there. It can be tough. I found that a couple of the people I was able to talk to..explain that the work needs to get done and that was enough. With others it won't be and you'll need to warn and write them up.
Sounds like you are doing just fine. Your true friends will help you succeed.

It is a tough spot your in. I've been in that spot. I had to tell my friends that while at work I was their boss and asked if they could help me and when I moved up the ladder I would put in a good word for them. I find you get more with honey than vinegar. If you make them resent you -boy, are you gonna be miserable!!
That company has put their trust in you to get the job done. They sign your paycheck. Your friends that respect you and are truly your freinds will want to see you succeed. The others- make 'em clean the toilets.

i went through the same thing , i worked at KFC as a cook for years , but then got moved to maniger , but i didnt realy have many probloms as i was an a$$ as a cook and everyone knew what to expect from me beforehand
but that was a very very common problom the company had, promaoting from within a store was always a bad idea , mostly after your training period they would trancfer you to another store so these probloms wouldnt happen, is it posible for you to tranfer or are you stuck in the spot your in?
my advice would be to take each person you have some trouble with aside and talk to them one on one and explain how things HAVE to be for you to be able to run the store as it needs run

Basically, if you ain't pissing people off, you ain't in charge. You do get more flies with honey. Unfortunately, a lot of employees, even the ones you got along with as a peer, are more like mosquitoes. Nothing works but "brute force".
I just inherited a new team here at work. I pretty much get along with all of them, but there are a couple that are not happy with me. It'* part of the territory.
Life'* hard. Get a helmet....
