They don't hold enough because of how you filled out your W-4 when you were hired. If you put too many exemptions, then you'll be owing them instead of breaking even or getting paid.
Since I have a wife and kid, and she doesn't work, I always get paid. It'* also nice that about half of my income isn't taxable.

It'* soooo awesome. I make over $45k a year with my base pay, BAH, and BAS. But come tax time they only see that I make about $25k or so. Then they see I support a family, so they just give me a ton of money.

didn't know you could do that. I use a 1040EZ, guess I could switch to the long form. One question though: Am I allowed to claim deductions even though I'm still legally dependent on my parents?
