Default flooded vehicle trans/transfer case?

No anti-dodge sentiments please, I've heard them all already.

My buddy'* '99 Dodge Dakota has been my daily driver for a couple of weeks now, and the transfer case has finally given out. We've been having a heck of a time finding a used one. I've now found two sets of matched transes and transfer cases for a really, REALLY good price. Problem is, they're connected to vehicles that were totaled due to having been flooded. How badly damaged will they be?

Thanks

Odds are they will have had water in them. I would avoid it like the plague, personally. That doesn't mean I'm right though.

It would have been fresh water; we're in the midwest. I'll be tearing it apart and checking it out before it goes in Sounds like a lot of effort, but will save us $500+.

if it is an electric shift case, odds are that all of the electronics are ruined from the water...so consider that also.

In a pinch you can pull the front drive shaft and xfer case out; and then drop in a 4x2 drive shaft.
