Why I don't drive a Sentra

Sister drives an 06 Nissan Sentra 1.8S. Pretty nice little car. She was driving down the highway yesterday and heard a firecracker noise. This is why:

Surprisingly there was zero tire damage. Nissan wanted 600 to replace the wheel initially. I tthink they are going to cover it though, it has to get re-evaluated by someone higher up. I should be able to find a stock replacement online far cheaper if need be though. Weird thing is, my sister's boss had the same exact thing happen to his Maxima last summer.

Wow, that's amazing. My friend has a sport Sentra (got the faster motor, I presume), and manages to lose traction in 2nd gear. Pretty quick little thing...

MOS95B 11-29-2006 10:35 AM

A blowout on a '06 wheel, and they have to get higher-ups to approve a replacement??? If it were the tire, maybe, but the wheel????

Doppleganger 11-29-2006 10:39 AM

I'd seriously send pictures of that wheel to someone other than the dealer. NHTSA maybe?

A wheel failure like that has to be some kinda manufacturing/materials/design defect. I've NEVER seen a wheel break like that before. Ever.

Damn.

Were not trying to make the imoprts look good

That's rather un-nerving  :o

banned3800 11-29-2006 10:46 AM

Look close.... That whell looks a little thin as far a material is concerned.. Could have also been a diffrent type of alloy... I'm supprised to see it that thin tho..

Looks like a weakness in the part where the diameter changes. Seriously, how can they make a wheel out of metal that can't withstand tire pressure. That is sad.

Logan 11-29-2006 11:56 AM

One of my profs was best friends with someone who while inflating a tire, a similar thing happened, and a piece of the metal went into his head and killed him. Scary

BLACK94SSEi 11-29-2006 12:07 PM

Wow Scary!! If that happened to me, I would be swapping out those rims entirely. I would be afriad to drive it knowing that it could happen again.

Glad your sister is okay after it happened.

bonnie94ssei 11-29-2006 01:54 PM

And people say foreign cars are the only reliable cars.

I have to agree. I would definately be making some phone calls and sending some pics.

Don't allow Nissan to keep the wheel either ;)

If they replace it they keep it.

toastedoats 11-29-2006 02:11 PM

holy shit!

BonneMeMN 11-29-2006 02:12 PM

Kinda scary yah, but it doesn't make all Nissans or Sentras bad.

I wonder about the car, balancing, and overinflation on that wheel.

there is absolutely no question AT ALL that the wheel was defective, if there was tire damage, then there could have been another fault, but with no substantial tire damage, that wheel is 100% without question defective

What caused the defect though is my point? Bad materials sent through Nissan, something that happened in shipping etc. If we hear of more of these, then it's definitely a design error.

Maybe demand a 3rd party shop checks out the others for stress, small cracks, etc.

Werd. One case isn't enough to talk up Bonneville or the domestic set in general. If what people are saying in this thread rings true, What do UIM/LIM and transmission failures say about us?

Hans 11-29-2006 04:42 PM

get a lawyer....lawsuit time

J Wikoff 11-29-2006 04:45 PM

A disintegrating UIM is a lot less likely to kill you than a disintegrating wheel.

repinS 11-29-2006 04:47 PM

IM gaskets won't kill, but it doesn't speak volumes to reliabilty in general, which was commented on in this thread.

Gumball 11-29-2006 05:06 PM

 never seen or heard of that before.

smellbird 11-29-2006 06:15 PM

Good luck getting Nissan to cooperate.
