Whoa Black Betty!

Still up for sale but no takers. :(

Dropped the price to $4900 and most peoples comment is....."that's more than I have to spend, sorry!" :?

People just don't appreciate a great car, even if it is old and ratty.

Over the last 3 years I've owned it I spent about $9,000. fixing and upgrading it. I know I will never recover that so will have to be content with writing it off to 3 years of enjoyable driving in all weather conditions even though I only put on about 5,000 miles (8,000 kms for us Canuks).

So maybe I'll just drive it this one last summer and write it off........literally
I'd rather watch it burn than let it go for $1,000. :x

Then sell it for just a little more than I paid for it when it was a pile of junk.

You guys might have a better idea of what I need to ask for it so someone would be interested in a car that will only go 250 miles on an $80 tank of fuel.
:?: :?:

vital49 03-08-2008 06:04 PM

Why sell it? It's obviously worth more to you than anyone else.

2000SilverBullet 03-08-2008 07:33 PM

Because it is so powerful I'm afraid my 17 year old new driver son will kill himself in it.
I want to use the money to buy him something a little smaller......engine wise. ;)

willwren 03-08-2008 09:18 PM

Keep the car, hide the keys, and tell him to buy his own car.

PontiacDad 03-08-2008 10:12 PM

Thats the problem with a car like Black Betty, its hard to move when your ready to sell.
Find a 6 cylinder transplant until Victor can safely take the reigns of a big V8 8)

FiReDeViL 03-08-2008 10:37 PM

man keep that car, you WILL be kicking yourself later for it

2000SilverBullet 03-08-2008 11:27 PM

Compared to my immaculate Formula WS6 the Trans Am is pretty rough.

My Formula has the identical drivetrain but it's been with me since day one. I know every bolt and gasket on that car. That's what made rebuilding the Trans Am so easy. I even had some of the old parts on the Formula that I used for the T/A.

The only thing I'll miss is the open air T-tops. Those were cool on a warm summer day. 8)

It's not gone yet but I have it listed on Craigslist Vancouver for $4,900. firm and so far two guys are really interested and one is even driving up from Vancouver to see it on Monday. That will cost him about $200 for fuel and ferry both ways and take him all day, so he must be serious......let's see if he shows up. :?

Victor has personally spent about $1,200 on the stereo and half of the front windshield so my plan is to give him $2,400. and he can get what ever he wants and that's it the rest is all up to him.
Chynna will get $1,500 for her to get a little beater and that leaves $1,000 for me which is what I paid for the car originally.

I'm not too worried if it doesn't sell either cause they can do without wheels after the way they have treated me in the past, so that will make me FIRM with that price, not a penny less :!:

.......and it has $400 Koni adjustable front shocks, a killer cam and a brand new Starter......

I think I'll rob the power trunk release off it cause my Formula didn't come with that option.

chadow427 03-09-2008 03:19 AM

I'll give ya a Honduh for victor and 500 bucks. :D

100% in agreement here. Kids never learn to appreciate anything if it's given to them.

2000SilverBullet 03-09-2008 11:53 AM

Yes my point exactly. I know he won't appreciate this car for what it is so that's why I'm just going to give him back what he put into it plus a little extra cause, well, cause I'm his Dad.

The guy trying talking me down in price but I held firm. He agreed to the $4900 and is supposed to be here tomorrow to strike the deal. I told him he better be bringing a certified check after he said he would pay with brand new $100 bills.......there are too many counterfeit ones floating around. :?

All you have to do is hold it up and look for the strip inside the bill.

2000SilverBullet 03-09-2008 05:35 PM

 I linked him to this thread and it was an easy sell.

hey u drive a hard bargain for a canuck lol but i appreciate your honesty and understand you put in alot of work and time into it so i will offer u 4900 even though it kills me i hope its a great deal in order for me to help you u gotta help me write the car off to me as a gift so i dont pay the darn taxes on it so its kinda of a win-win situation for both of us i hope we could come to terms my canuck brotha lol email me back a.s.a.p ps it would be great if i could see those reciepts and if i was gonna come down there i would most likely bring cash all brand new 100 dollar bills or a cheque if you perfer thanks god bless
Still have an uneasy feeling about this one.

My reply....

Hey Rocky,

It won't kill you once you get behind the wheel after paying so little for this car. LOL
In a way I'm sad you accepted cause I did want more for it and will miss my Black Betty :(

Yes, I have all the receipts in a very large envelop.

While I did say I would accept cash, brand new $100 bills make me a little concerned in light of all the counterfeit ones circulating recently, I'm sure you can understand that my canuk brotha ;)
So Please bring a bank certified check. I will not accept a personal check.

Yes, I will write the car off to you for say $500. I've dealt with transferring ownership and car sales a few times and they are wise to that trick. That will only cost you $35. a savings of over $300 which should pay for your trip here :)

Seriously this has the makings of a scam. I would avoid dealing with this person.

2000SilverBullet 03-10-2008 12:37 PM

:? Hmmmm so how would I know if the Certified Check is counterfeit :?:

He's coming over next Saturday now. Couldn't make it today......god bless

2000SilverBullet 03-10-2008 05:16 PM

OH NO :!:

So I'm driving Black Betty a lot this last few days to burn down a full tank of fuel and BE DAMNED if it hasn't just started to develop an annoying lifter tap that increases in sound with rpm.

I whipped off the drivers side valve cover to inspect for the obvious but everything is tight and clean.
I can only suspect a collapsed lifter.

What a time for this to happen.

Now, should I tell the propective buyer before he comes up with his Certified cheque........and risk him bringing the price down......I did say, as is, but I did say that there was nothing mechanically wrong with it :?:

Need some feedback on this one guys. :?

Gumball 03-10-2008 05:18 PM

I thought you sent him a link to this thread?

Shadow 03-10-2008 05:45 PM

Again this guy sounds fishy. I would not worry too much about him and more about your car.

2000SilverBullet 03-10-2008 06:10 PM

I just copied and pasted the thread.....with a little bit of doctoring ;)
I knew he would have to join to be able to view lounge posts.

So I suppose I should start posting over in the mechanical forum to try and resolve the tapping sound problem.
It sure has a lot of power all across the rpm range though.
.....and the exhaust also sounds unusually louder than normal, as if normal was anywhere near normal.

PontiacDad 03-10-2008 07:04 PM

This works for lifter tap but not the kinda thing you would do if were to keep it.

Add a half liter of ATF to the crank case, start the engine wait a few minutes for it to clear if it doesn't pour a half liter of Kerosene in the crank case. Give a few minutes then change the oil.
The atf is a detergent and the kerosene rinses it out, works for sticky lifters.
Did this trick to a truck I traded off, last 100 miles I drove it, it was as quite as a mouse ;)

My impala was given to me.. I'm 18.. I paid half the payments when I had a job.. I haven't had a job so it's basically being given to me. I appreciate it wholesomely.

2000SilverBullet 03-15-2008 10:22 PM

Well it's officially gone now :!:

I was sad to see it go.

Rocky showed up with his two black hoodied, black ball capped Homies in a red Honda Accord.

Complained a little about the lifter clacking and also pointed out some previous body filler that was probably used to repair a fender bender 15 years ago......ended up parting with my Black Betty for $4,500...........and yes, he ended up bringing cash, but I had my banker wife inspect it all and made hime exhange 3 of the bills that looked suspect.

Victor got 22 of those $100 bills to buy himself a replacement.
So far it's between a $1,200. Jeep Cherokee or a $1,700 SSEi.

Shadow 03-16-2008 01:16 AM

Awesome that the sale went thru. Hopefully she will be well treated.

His brother has a body shop and he wants to make it glossy black and put some chome wheels on it. Will send me pics when done with it.

I sure hope the clacking noise was not a rod bearing or wrist pin and it is as simple as a colapsed lifter. Had a bad miss also above 3000 rpm.

Attachment 34278

Goodbye Rocky and Black Betty.....

willwren 03-16-2008 11:28 AM

Bad miss above 3k would point to a lifter over the other possibilities.

Think of it as simplifying your life a little. ;)

93-SSE 03-16-2008 11:36 AM

Glad that worked out for ya!
The Jeep Cherokee is nice, atleast the one I had for a few months. But he's gotta go with the SSEi. ut either way there they're nice vehicles.
