Where were YOU when it happened?

As the topic describes, where were you when the terrorist attacks of September 11th happened?

I was half falling asleep in my English class, and then my Math class after 10am... this was my like, second week of high school - my first full, five-day week. By lunchtime, I had seen the images on CNN on our cafeteria's TV's... scared the living shit out of me to see the buildings collapse :|

At the office, workin on design schematics for the airports' west pedestrian bridge. My friend Martin was on cnn.com, and giving me the unreal play by play

I was in Knoxville, TN. I had 5 deliveries in the small town in that area. I woke up and took my shower at the Pilot truck stop and got in the trcuk. This was at 7:30 am EST. I made it to a small town around the Dollywood area and made my deliveries. I got aaround the 4th one and that waas around 11:00am and didn't even know anything. It was a regular hard working morning to me. I did notice the nextel that I had didn't have a signal and didn't think nothing much of it. When I finally finished my 4th delivery, my signal regained strength and I get a phone call from my ex-wife (then friend).

She said she was trying to get in touch with me for the past 3 hours and called me at least 20 something times. I was shocked with that. Made me feel special but that wasn't the reason. She asked me if I knew what was going on and I said no. She said that there were some planes that crashed into the WTC and I siad WHAT?!! She said that the Arabs are at it again and ............ and I just couldn't believe it. I was wondering why nobody say anything about it before but when she did mention it, everyone in town was talking about it.

I then went to my last stop and called my grandmother. She explaind to me what had happened in detail as far as the towers are gone. I didn't think she knew waht she was talking about because how can a building just collapse with ppl in it. She told me to watch tv and so I cut the tv on in the truck and all of the stations were on it. I was in total shock to see all of that. When I did see the buildings just burning I was like ok were are the helecopters with the water? Next thing I know, the buildings collapse. Tears started rolling down my eyes. As I was watching this with my grandmother she had said I better Thank God for sending me in Tennesse insteasd of my normal New York run that I go to. I said it must have been a reason why I am here instead of there.

I was at work... we didn't have a TVs so were were going to CNN.com until the 2nd plane hit.

Then we got out a TV Tuner and installed it into a computer, and used some wire to make an antenna, so we could watch it all on CBC.

willwren 09-11-2003 08:49 PM

I was at home. Went upstairs to check email, and saw the first tower had been hit by a plane on Yahoo! news. Went downstairs to watch it on TV while I got the kids ready for school. Watched the second one hit live with Lilpooky. That's when we knew it wasn't an accident.

Rogue 09-11-2003 09:00 PM

I was at work on our 4th floor when we first heard about it over a radio in someones cubicle. cnn.com was totally unavaiable due to increased hits as well as all the major news players even slashdot was slow. Went downstairs to the cafeteria to watch the news on the TV. Kendra was flying in from Buffalo and got grounded in Pennsylvania when they grounded the planes. It was pretty tense sense I knew she was flying and they said a plane had gone down in Pennsylvania. Not a lot of work got done that day.

I was flying in from NY into PA and then from PA to OH. My friend and I were in Buffalo for a conference. We were on the tarmack in PA the plane had just revved the engines for take off when the captain said "Sorry for the delay folks. There has been a terroist threat in NY and all planes across the United States have been grounded. If you have a cell phone please call you family and let them know that you are alright." Once we got into the airport it was Packed! then they started shutting down resturants and bars. Turning off the T.V's and radios. The only way I knew what was going was by calling home and talking to Todd. The Red Cross started shutting people to tents set up in parking lots with cots in them. Thankfully my friend husband made the 5 hour trip to Pittsburg to pick us up. The airport was very erie. No one pushing or shoving. People offering strangers rides. They were anouncing over the pa system of vans or buses going to certain destinations. A day that I will never forget. I now am sure to ALWAYS give my exact itinary and flight numbers to Todd. All he knew that day was that I was flying out of NY that morning.

willwren 09-11-2003 09:08 PM

That's really odd...... Todd's wife was in the same situation.......

What a coincidence!

YOU COULD HAVE BUMPED INTO HER AT THE AIRPORT! :!: :!: :!:

smellbird 09-11-2003 09:24 PM

I was at Mankato Oil and Tire having my wheels mounted and balanced. I wasnt in any mood to show off my wheels that day.

Damemorder 09-11-2003 09:53 PM

i was walking into my second period trig class, i had a feeling something was up but their were no tv's in programming 3 and the hallways had a no noise policy. teacher still made us do our work between conversations and watching tv. i had to laugh at a buddy of mine after he filled up his 18 gal tank @ $4.50/gal and the prices dropped the next day... and even that only got a giggle given the situation

LittleHoov 09-11-2003 10:16 PM

i was in my first period class, dont recall what it was at the time, but they wheeled in a tv and we watched it live. scary stuff.

BonneMeMN 09-11-2003 10:20 PM

Was in my second class of the day, Mr. Carlsons Class. It was Economics but he was also a social studies teacher (go figure). Someone was runnign around to all the classrooms, and we saw after the first one hit. I was one of like 3 seniors in the room, most of the kids were just juniors who don't know a thing about world events (AT ALL). Then we left it on, and Mr Carlson jumped up and said "WHAT'S THAT!?!?!" Then we all knew right away.... Every teacher had it on most of the day, until stuff died down. I just went home, and sat infront of our TV speechless with my mom. A guy from Bloomington (5 mins up I-35) was the main guy who helped bring the plane that crashed in PA down. His wife had called him, and he knew what was going on in NY, and DC, so he got people together and told his wife that he loved her. Another guy out of the twin cities was the "20th terrorist" and went to pilots school with them, met with them, etc. But he got busted about a month before the attacks, and they didn't investigate far enough into it at the time.

Something completely stupid at my school just angers me to no end either. Some kids thought they'd do the senior prank, and they spray painted the concrete one way into the school, and part of the building. One of them wrote 9-11-02, and we will always remember 'close to it'. They got found out, and even got terroristic threat fines, etc ontop of the other offenses.

2000SilverBullet 09-11-2003 10:25 PM

I happened to be up getting ready for work and was watching the Los Angelos news when it happened. Watched it happen live on TV. What a shock when the second plane hit the tower.

9 11

My lady and I were on are way to work. Driving west on 95th going to the 294 interstate expressway ( Chicago ). And on the radio we hear the host say that a plane has crashed into the WTC. At first they were saying that it was an accident and that they were trying to get more info. As we were merging into traffic from the on ramp a lady on the radio station started to yell & scream. " Another plane just hit the WTC ". At that point we said that this was no accident. We hjust kept listening to the host give more & more details of what was happening NY. By the time we got to work in Schaumburg the 3 plaine had hit. People at work were crying. Some people left due to family in the area. It was an unbelivible time & something I will never forget. No work was done that day! What I had forgotten was that my sister was fly out on NY to ATL earilier that morning but due to the phone not working out east I was not able to find out any info on her flight or if anyone in my family had spoken to her. After a few hours we found out that her plane had been grounded. I was happy to hear she was alright. I tell you this after 9 11 I saw so many people with flags on there cars and people were being real nice. But that only lasted a short time. The flags were still flying, But I guess some people forgot what they were for or really did not get the lesson that we should have all learned that day.

Allmachtige 09-11-2003 11:36 PM

Senior year at high school in Psychology class. Class just started and kids were talking about some planes crashing and I was clueless what they were discussing...then the whole class started talking about it and I still had no idea what they were talking about. Finally I asked in a stern voice to the entire class, "What the HELL happened?!?!"

We all walked down the library and watched the second tower get hit on CNN...I freaked just like everyone else.

PontiacDad 09-11-2003 11:47 PM

Same as Willwren and SilverBullet, I live in the Pacific time zone as well. Was watching Tv before work when they went 'live' ,saw the second plane hit and then the Washigton dc attack.......called into work sick and watched all day.
My hero of that period was Todd Beamer the one given credit for downing that fourth plane along with the other passengers.

Hailey 09-12-2003 12:03 AM

I woke up and grabbed a bowl of cereal...went to the tv and turned it on and the first thing I saw was the second plane crashing into the tower...I thought it was a movie. I was in shock until the tower fell and then I just cried for the next eight hours....I will never forget that as long as I live.

JrFaust 09-12-2003 12:21 AM

I was at work putting some computers together and a co-worker walk up to me and said a plain crashed into the WTC. I said oops and laughed thinking it was like a single engine plain that had lost control. Until I walked into the owners room where the TV was on. And I see one tower with smoke just poring out. Then I see this jet plain in the back ground and at first I thought it was fling by. Then it rounded out and came in. I saw it hit the second tower dead on center I just went numb. I knew it wasn't a mistake and I knew it meant war, I just hoped it wouldn't be but I really did expected a more devastating response i.e. lighting up the Middle East and making it glow since we've responded that way in the past. That thought just kept pounding my brain we're going to war and it going to be bad I mean real bad. But in the end I feel that the response was a thought out and responsible one.

I didn't know anyone in either tower but I still cry every time I remember that day. My heart goes out to all those still being affected by that day.

CraZyDriVer868 09-12-2003 12:25 AM

I was in Ms. Kampas class...geomertry...anyways...principal came in said to turn on the tv...turned it on...right as the 2nd plane hit...now this teacher doesn tlike swearing in the class...but when i said HOLY FU*K out loud she didnt say a thing! it was a very sad day...i was more pissed off than anything...screw all the military training...give me 2 pistols...and a assult riffle..and ill go mess someone up

driverjohn2005 09-12-2003 01:01 AM

I was in a dead sleep, but then my alarm clock/radio went off and I had it set on a local radio station. They were talking about it non-stop! So, finnaly I turned on my bedroom T.V. and I couldn't belive what I saw. The Twin Tower's were plumming with black smoke out of the upper floors. Immediatly I ran down satirs and told my mom!

That day I will never forget!

FiReDeViL 09-12-2003 01:30 AM

I remember this QUITE well, i wasnt working at the time, so i was sleeping in, and i was in the middle of a NICE restful sleep, when my mother walked in and said a plane hit the WTC, i was like ummmm rigth ok mom, thinking it was one of those 1/2 asleep dreams
then she said, Matt im serious... i said i remeber muttering incoherently about how she should stop messin w. me... she goes turn on the f'in tv.... this woke me up rigth away cuz mom NEVER says that word....i woke up straight away and turned on the tv, in time to see one of the first replays of the first plane hitting...my jaw dropped... i canceled EVERYTHING i had planned for that day and sat and watched CNN for almost 20 hours straight.... i just couldnt stop...

Burgundy_Boat 09-12-2003 02:13 AM

sitting in Mr. Kinsey's Algebra 1 class. just sat there watching CNN all period, then in second period the teacher refused to turn on CNN and assinged work... i was f'in pissed and didn't do it, third period the teacher didn't have a TV so we just sat around and talked about how nice the middle east would look with a coating of glass on the ground and a nice greenish tinge to everything. and i happened to have the same teacher for 2nd and 4th periods, by 4th period he had decided to turn on CNN

aviator327 09-12-2003 04:52 AM

I was at home watching it live. I just couldn't believe it. I have flown into La Guardia (LGA) countless times. If you are approching from the North you fly right down the Hudson River right by the WTC and then turn around for a landing on Rwy 04. It was always such a beautiful sight to see those buildings from the air. Alot of our crews were stranded for days after it happened. I was flying in there one morning and there was a low fog layer all over NYC. The top of the fog layer was razor sharp and there were only three buildings sticking up through the fog, the Empire State and the WTC. It was an impressive sight and one I will never forget.

MOS95B 09-12-2003 07:58 AM

I had just gotten home from work, and turned on the TV. I watched the first tower burning for a bit and then called my wife at work to see if she knew what was going on. Right then, the second plane hit, so the first thing she heard from me was "Holy s**t, we're going to war..."

They, of course, had been watching at work all along, so she knew exactly what I meant.

The whole event still hits me pretty hard. I just wish more people remembered it when they start complaining about the war on terrorism. We may never completely rid the world of terrorists, but we can sure do our best to make thier lives a living hell...

TrueWildMan 09-12-2003 09:39 AM

I was where I'm sitting at right now. In front of my computer at work, drafting away, browsing the internet and saw the first one. We turned on the radio to a news channel and listened a bit. When I pulled up the pic of the first hit, my boss exclaimed, "It's fake!!" Then the second one hit... Then he said, "It's Bin Laden!!"
