Default Searching for car via VIN#

My brother use to own a 68 Cougar. He sold it to someone, and the guy that bought it, offered to sell it back to him sometime later. Many moons later, my brother is now interested in getting that car back. Location of that car is unknown. Only thing he still has is the VIN #. Anyway he can use that # to trace it to a current owner?

Thats a tough one. You cant get any info from Carfax except for the state its registered to, and I dont think it would go in your favor should you ask the DMV

Thats probably the only way you will find out the owners location.

I cant think of any other way.

carfax generally displays the current title number also, maybe if you get lucky the dmv will give you the info. but i dont think youll get anywhere with that. tho i have noticed that carfax is usually correct on the city that the car is registered in so that would narrow it down a little for ya.

I *think* there is a form you can fill out at the SOS that you can do what you are looking to do. There would be a small fee though.

Ok. thanks for the info guys. I was telling him to try Carfax, but I also knew that the car had to have a CURRENT registration for it to give a good location. Something along those lines.

Yea, keep us posted. I am sure others will want to know how to do this also.

well there is kinda a back story on that car...it might be sitting in the middle of a junkyard or something. It was sort of stolen from me...and I am still looking for it...and now that i remmeber how much I miss that car, I am determined to find it. I have been up all night looking for some way some how. I am going to call the Hawaii DMV on monday morning and see if they will help me out.

Ok I just found a website that has all DMV records and you can search for any car, anywhere, around the world, but it might cost you a pretty penny. I want to find my car, problem is...I can't remember my license plate number and I don't know the VIN, so now it is search time on that...ohh man...so here you go, if you want to find that car of yours, you can find the owner and the address etc...

Did any 68'* have titles? Titles didn't start until '74 here in NY.
