Default Whats everybody'* opinion on the Oldsmobile Alero? *UPDATE*

im looking at one at a local dealer and its pretty nice, its a 2000 GLS coupe thats just about fully loaded except a sunroof. 52k on it with the 3400 V6 which is pretty damn powerful tho it has some torque steer on it which im not too fond of but its not that big of a deal. according to the dealer the car came from cali seems to have traveled far for it to end up in illinois.

so whats everyone think of the alero?

Only thing I can warn you of is the known intake leaks they have. Check to see if there is anything leaking at the lower intake gasket. My sister has a 99 or 00 and it had that problem. After searching online I found out that numberous others did too. Beyond that, it'* not bad car. Definetly has some power for it'* size.

Definately look out for the lower intake gaskets, i know from experience how much of a pain in the *** they are to change. It'* no 3800 Besides that, they seem to be pretty solid cars. A friend of mine has a black '00 GLS that'* loaded but he'* had a lot of problems with it in 79k miles. The wheelbearings keep going out and the battery has died a few times on him. Besides that i love the power they have, and they handle great if you have the big fat 16'* on them.

I had a 02 Alero GLS for a short time. It was a fun car to drive and had a good deal of power but I had some major issues with build quality. The interior panels kept poping loose, esp. in the back. Some other things on the inside just seemed a little cheap to me. Overall, not a bad car but it could have been assembled with much better parts.

the intake looks good, the engine was cleaned and is all nice and shiney but i make a point of checking the coolant and oil, they all seem good, no crap under the oil cap or on the dipstick, the coolant looks full, aged but full. it runs really good no stumbling or anything unlike my old bonneville. handles wayyyyyy better than it ever did, and looks better. the only problems with it are cosmetic, the paint is scratched and theres a very small crease in the hood thats just enough to crack the paint. other than that its a very nice car and i think im gonna go after it its hard to resist the lure of oldsmobile

My mom has a 2003 GLS with the 3400. She bought it brand new and has loved it ever since. Been an excellent car for her. No problems with it in the 41,000 miles of it'* life. She takes it to the dealer for EVERYTHING and does all the suggested maintenance according to the GM schedule. The car never gets beat on either.

I, too, have already warned her about the lower intake gaskets.

My girlfriends' sister has an 03 GLS, loaded out with everything. Its a capable car, but does have build issues. A new 3400 will not give you to much trouble.

If it was me, I would step up to an Intrigue or Aurora. It may not be as new, but you'll be getting WAY more car for the money.

The Alero is pretty much identical to the Grand Am is it? The profile looks exactly the same. There'* different dashes, etc. My bro had one but the block cracked. My bro'* wife drove that and it wasn't even driven hard.

So I would watch out for cracked blocks.
