Default Question about serial #'* and autherized dealers

I was curious about something. When u buy something from an authorized deal (in this case a car amplifier) is the serial # recorded by them and kept on file?

Im wondering because i bought my Memphis amp used, however the previous owner bought the equipment from an authorized deal. I only used the amp for 1 day and it has malfunctioned. I contacted Memphis Car Audio Tech center and talked to the main tech guy, he said he understood (thinking i was the original owner) and transferred me to customer service, they werent as understanding. The stated they couldnt repair it unless I had the warranty info or a receipt from the authorized deal. Well they could do it but would charge me $150!

Since i didnt purchase the equipment new i dont have either of these things. I continued to talk to Jay (Tech guy) and i think he is working with me. He sent me an email just asking for the serial # (which is on the bottom of the amp) and the location, and Business name i bought it from and about when it was purchased.

I have tried to contact the guy i bought the stuff from many many many times to get this info from him but he wont return my calls or texts.

Sooo my question is, how thorough r they regarding serial #'*? can i just pick a local authorized dealer and tell em i bought it there, or will they check by contacting that business and cross referencing the serial #'*?

From my experience they don't track serial numbers well. They provide them to a big distributor who send them out ***** nilly. It'* worth a shot. What'* the worst that could happen, they say no you don't service it?

Most repair shops want the card, you lose it, you lose. They dont get paid without it to reference to the maker. Especially with stereos and the like. There were no serial numbers on my invoices for my Alpine Amp or the Kicker sub. They came with warranties that had tear off cards to mail back to the manufacturer. And had statements on them that the warranty wasn't good unless I mailed them in and registered the products. Rarely are the numbers kept outside of the original invoice, andeven on them..... not so much. Also original warranties for those kinds of things don't last long and don't transfer to a second owner, How old is the unit anyway.
