Default Canadian and American History Lessons

OK, I read the current threads about American sentiment on the Global scale, and the humorous spinoff thread about 10 things about Canada

Isnt part of the problem related to ignorance and the popular media feeding a target group what they want them to hear?

So would it stand to reason that education could be a large part of the solution?

I would like to hear some fact about Canadian govermment, lifestyle and things related uniquly to Canada.

Conversely, Americans can share the same types of facts about the USA.

This could be fun, a real eye opener for those of us who didnt attend college or dont watch CNN/Fox (insert popular sound byte media coverage here) and maybe some can leave a little smarter

Government, well we have a system based on the British system. But we have municipal, provincial and federal divisions of gov't each with their own set of taxation, enforcement and policies. When we vote, we don't vote on a single leader, we vote for a member of that political party in our local ridings. For example in Mississauga South, we have 4 Federal candidates that represent each party, Liberal, Progressive Conservative, New Demcratic Party and Green Party. Quebec has the separitist party the Bloc Quebecois. At election time we vote for a local riding candidate and their party leader then wins if enough ridings are won nation wide.

Recently we did have an election and Paul Martin, the leader of the Liberal party won a minority goverment, he is the the PM and the Liberal have the most seats (ridings) but didnt win enough ridings nation wide to control the balance of power.

Balloting is dead easy, 4 names, you pick one....done.

Notable achievements: Insulin, CANDU reactors, AVRO Arrow (to bad is was scraped), the telephone, UN Peacekeeping, Vimy Ridge in WW1, thats all that comes to mind off the bat at 12am on a Monday

D Day was an effin valiant effort by ALL Allied forces, we didnt have the sheer numbers that the Brits and the Americans had, but we fought strong and were victorious despite our few numbers.

WW2 vets say the Canadian infantry was the most vicious and effective in battle because we simply didnt have the numbers to cart out.

Very proud of that effort.

Despite you bullies :P

Not the most vicious infantry in WW2. I hear a lot about some small U.*. regiments and the **** SS was feared by a lot of armies.

Does Canada or Britain have a higher population?
