In 2010, I bought my 16 year old Son a 1998 S10 ZR2. He went off to work in another state at age 18. He did not maintain the fluids. Every-time I saw him, I would do the maintenance, including the 13 zerk grease points on the front end of the S10.
About five years ago, the transmission went out. Ended up using the local Chevy dealer by him to replace the transmission. Cost about $2800. One month after the three year warranty ended- the transmission failed again. I then had a local to him guy replace the transmission for $800, it dies six months later.
The reason I believe the transmissions may have been dying is loss of trans fluid. Some research suggests the transfer cases on the S10 have a seal failure, which promotes loss of trans fluid. Put that issue with a drive who does not check fluids- and that may be a cause of the problem.
Ended up selling my Son my Wife'* car, and taking the S10 back. It has been sitting for about 18 months. It needs a new transmission. I looked on RockAuto, they have replacement transmissions for about $1100, but the core charge is $350, and shipping is $350, and shipping the core back is also a big cost. I tried to see if I could pick up the transmission, but could not even get a reply back to my e-mails.
The S10 has about 210k miles on it. I am trying to figure out what to do. I see lots of 4L60e transmission on Craigslist, but seems that the 1998 S10 4WD uses a different series than many other Chevy trucks. And I don't have a lift so I would have to put the truck on stands to get it out.
If I was any closer to you, I'd ****** it right from you.
Yeah me too. It'* a cute little truck.
If you need the truck, it looks worth repairing. If not, slap a junkyard transmission in it and sell it. I don't know about your area, but in my area it would be $3,000.00 to overhaul it.
Did some research via RockAuto of all places. Looks like a 98,99,00 trans from a S10, Blazer, or Bravada are fully compatible and seamless with the 98 ZR2 4L60E.
Is pilling the trans out of a Blazer and putting it in the Zr2 something I can do with just jackstands at my work parking lot? Or even if it can be done is it crazy to try?
