I'm NOT, in any way, saying that the people who have died in the space program deserved to, BUT they go in knowing the risk and still choose to do this. I doubt they, or their families, consider their lives a waste.

As for the billions of dollars, it could be spent in worse ways...

Doing stupid stuff, like studying what makes flies hard to swat with a fly swatter (a study which has been done). Studying space helps us figure out how the universe came to be and where we are going. Medical experiments and other physics experiments are done there which can be used here on Earth.

"This is Major Tom to ground control"......

Scary as hell if you ask me. Floating around thousands of miles outside of earths orbit? One mix-up and you could be lost in space forever!

Imagine it, your doing a space walk and your teather cord snaps. You hit your pack thrusters but they don't respond.........!!!!!!!!!!!!
You watch your only taxi that’* going home fade away into black! Not a damn thing you can do about it.

You have enough oxygen strapped to you to last a few hours but you KNOW that you’re going to die alone AND very far away from home. Your loved ones are far below you on a beautiful planet that’* called "HOME". But you can't do anything to get home. Your body will never be found, your grave will be outer space.

That’* a scary thought if you ask me. I think those guys and gals have more courage than a soldier fighting in combat.

I don't know about that. They are doing what they are truely passionate about. They volunteered for it. I am not saying that they want to die, but but to them it is definately a worthwhile cause.
