Trillian??

anyone using it

i like it
everything in one package

Jim W 04-13-2005 08:59 AM

I know Rogue uses it, he sent it to me, but was lost in the great Computer crash of 2004

vital49 04-13-2005 09:10 AM

I used to use it a while back. I didn't care for it at the time because it didn't allow me to set the preferences that I'm used to having in AIM, etc. That was an old version, it's probably improved now.

MOS95B 04-13-2005 09:24 AM

Look into Jabber, too. That's what we use at work because you can set up your own secure server....

Twister97 04-13-2005 11:04 AM

I used it a long time ago, never cared for it that much, but neat idea

Boreas 04-13-2005 11:22 AM

I used it for a while, but when they turned it into a resource hog with version 3 I stopped using it and went to Miranda IM, however that can be unreliable so ill belooking into something else. I heard that they fixed the performance issues of Trillian though, so I have yet to check that out.

glorkar 04-13-2005 11:50 AM

I had it once, but then I stopped having enough extra time to sit at the computer long enough to IM.

harofreak00 04-13-2005 12:13 PM

had it about 2 years ago...hated it....

but not im starting to know more ppl that dont have msn...

i just downloaded it, and ill try it for a few days...

it has really improved since then..but there are a lot of features i dont like already

MOS95B 04-13-2005 12:15 PM

Just in case you didn't know it, Trillian keeps a text log of all your IMs. A guy here thought he'd be "smart" and installed it to send stuff to his buddies. IT had to work on his machine, found the log and the stuff he'd been sending, and he don't work here no more. Probably lucky he ain't in jail, but I guess he didn't pass on that kind of info....

Does AIM do that too?

opensourceguy 04-13-2005 02:51 PM

In version 5, I believe so.

Gaim > all. Opensource too! :). http://gaim.sourceforge.net check it out. I love it, plus it has plugins galore.. so it can do a LOT of stuff. All the problems of older versions have been gone for quite some time. Back when I first started using it [v. 72] it would crash about every hour or two. Up until last week [needed a reboot, first time in 45 days on Linux!], I had an uptime of over 12 days [I have router issues]. So, it is extremely reliable with the newest release.

i dont like trillian just because it for some reason likes to merge mine and my girlfriends buddy lists, so i use gaim instead, much easier to use

rjolly87 04-13-2005 10:48 PM

i use trillian on a daily bases, and have come to prefer it, atleast version .74 anyway. i hate the new one. i used to use gaim religiously, but quit because it would always crash when i would hit a link. prolly been fixed, but i just havent gone from trillian. i say try both trillian, gaim, and all of the others too, and just find the one that strikes your fancy. also, trillian has a tendancy to not like to connect to msn and yahoo on occaision, but thats not enough of a problem for me to make me wanna change.

opensourceguy 04-14-2005 06:42 AM

The connection issues are on ALL 3rd party IM software for Yahoo and MSN. Yahoo tries different authentication, so nobody can use other software. MSN.. well MSN's server sucks, and they have been having a lot of problems lately.

Grab the latest version of Gaim, that was fixed in version .82 or something.

That issue (merging contact lists) has been fixed in v3.1. They have beefed up the identities and have made it the way they should have done it from the beginning.

I had some issues, but Trillian was very quick to remedy the problems and since then I haven't had any dropouts on any one of the three networks (AIM/ICQ, MSN, Yahoo) that I use. All of them work flawlessly.

I have been using Trillian since it first went public beta. I think its a great mulit-protocol IM client. It has started to use up more resources, but I don't notice it at all on either of my systems and they aren't the latest/greatest hardware (both systems are 2+ years old). One thing I really like about Trillian is the fact that all of the clients are in one easy to use interface. My workstation has both of my identities on it. I have 2 screen names (UINs) for both AIM & ICQ, one for my laptop (the one that I've had since '97) and one for my desktop. The new identities handling allows me to have both of these signed on at the workstation so if I don't want to startup my laptop I don't have to.

I can quite honestly say that in all of my time as a beta tester for Cerulean Studios, I have seen VERY few bugs as compared with other beta testers and I try to utilize all of the features to their fullest. The audio chat does very well now, although it was quite buggy back in v3.0.

Give it a try and you might be pleasantly surprised at how well it will do. I know that it isn't as slimmed down as MirandaIM, but for all of the preinstalled bells and whistles, it isn't as bloated as some of the standalone clients are by themselves.

I know AIM logs, because a google desktop search can bring up old convos...I think. But I don't know where they go...although I'd like to know where they are piling up in my computer.

swart: Gaim is based off of Trillian's connection code. So whatever problems Trillian has, Gaim as [as far as connecting goes]. And vise-versa. Trust me, I work semi-close with the developers. I help out whenever I can.. but I haven't fixed much anything. However, I did work on the fixing of the logged-in-time error. Quite proud of myself for that one :)

Yeah, I know. I haven't worked at fixing any issues, just testing the releases. I don't know enough about programming to fix anything. Just barely enough to do some damage, which is why I don't try! LOL!

I've used GAIM, but with MSN & Yahoo! + AIM/ICQ Trillian just works best for me. Although it has been afew years since I've used GAIM.

opensourceguy 04-14-2005 07:11 PM

Yeah, trillian gets the job done.. however it isn't cross-platform. So, right away I cannot use it. I'm on linux 24/7 right now. I'm not going to screw around with a program unless I can run it on all my boxes.

Like I said, Gaim has evolved greatly over the passed year or two. Definitely a great program.

Yeah, I know enough C to write a basic terminal program. However, these guys know this shit a helluva lot better than me. Object Oriented Programming bores me. I want something that can control my system, not make pretty GUIs ;)
