Default Headman Headers installed, need spark plug boots?

My parent'* 1995 350 V8 4x4 Suburban had a bad exhaust leak at the headers. My dad finally had enough of listening to it "click" in the morning before it warmed up. So, yesterday morning he droped it off at the exhaust shop to have the OEM headers replaced with Headman Headers.

My question is this, he is concerned that the spark plug wires, esp. near the the spark plug end, will get to hot and possibly melt with the new headers. Is it a valid concern? Would spark plug wire boots be a good idea? (Sorry, "boots" might be the wrong term. I hope you know what I am talking about )

Thanks guys!

-John

I would either get a header wrap or get boot protectors, because yes it can get hot. Are the headers ceramic coated?

Ya know, I'm not sure. I'm picking up the rig this afternoon. I'll ask the shop.

Is it a good or a bad thing if they are ceramic coated?

It'* a good thing. It' helps keep underhood temps down and the exhaust flows better.

I would say get the shields for the sparkplugs just to be safe.

I wouldn't worry about it. Drive the thing a while, check and see if it'* melted, if not, no worries. If it is, then it'* time to get the metal boot thingees that come on the rear bank of the Bonnies. Header wrap has been rumored to draw condensation when cooling down. I would take Bill Wren'* approach(assuming they are not ceramic coated) to heat insulation with the black tar stuff he bought and put on his EM'*. Paint on with a brush and let dry from engine heat. Odds are if the wires aren't touching you shouldn't have an issue. I can't imagine the stock 350 putting out EGT'* high enough to make the headers read more than 700*.
