Brake pad question
Is is uncommon to have pads wear ALL they way down without sqeaking one bit to show signs of going?
When I got my front tires replaced, the mechanic advised me that the front pads have about 35% life while the rears are fine. Well, 2 weeks down the line, my front brakes start to grind coming home from work one night I also got a nice whiff of burning metal after each brake application. Keep in mind, I am a mechanically inclined person so I'm well aware of most noises a car should make if something is worn out or shows signs of replacing, but I don't EVER recall the front brakes making the slightest squeak from the metal piece on the pads. I headed out Tires Plus since they my tires and offer the best price in town while having a 'first come first serve basis' so I knew I could get it in the same day. I thought I was just doing pads, but as it turned out, the metal was touching metal and the rotors were about 8mm to thin to turn them. So I had to fork over $266 for two new front rotors and pads oops I didn't have the chance to even shop around for cheaper rotors elsewhere but these are OEM ones as well as ceramic pads. I needed brakes ASAP so I was stuck paying it.
The mechanic also tells me that the rears have 10% life left and just yesterday they started to squeal. Since he told me that the rotors are 4mm to thin to turn them, he tells me I might be needing new rotors as well. This time im just going to buy the pads and have a local ind. shop install them without having the rotors turned (rear) I'd do it myself, but I live in an apt with no access to tools (at parents house in hometown) and a garage

Man, sorry about your bad luck. My front pads went completely out in one year. That frustrated me. Thank God I changed them in time. I sure could use some new rotors though. But in your case I don't think ceramic pads with stock rotors is the best idea. :?
hopefully I they will be 'ok' for a short term
