Go with a Dell. Hands down most reliable and best customer service.

I actually have a Gateway that is umm...three years old, I think. (Can't quite remember which year I bought it, anyways...). I've been extremely happy with it. I have delt with their customer service a couple times from things ranging to programs not working right to blowing out my DVD drive (which they replaced for me, just as my three years of service just about expired), and both their phone (granted the hold time is long sometimes) and their online chat services are great. ...That'* just what I have to go from, but I've been pleased.

i love my hp ze4300, i have had it ever since i sold my powerbook g3, the only thing i dont like about it is battery life, i can only get a little more than an hour out of it, but thats ok, its always plugged in. the woman in my life right now wants me to get her one off ebay for school so this is what im looking at for her.

If you want to know as far as consumer stats, they go from best to worst:

Alienware
Dell
Gateway
IBM
HP
Compaq (stay away from Compaq at all costs)

I'm pretty sure HP bought out Compaq. I have a Dell 2650 laptop that'* a couple of years old now and had no problems with it.
