Tabs for your plate...

i have to get new tabs for my plate soon and i looked at what its going to cost me, $101.00!!!! every other vehicle i've had was in the $46 range! why is a bonneville so much more?

Depends on how your state taxes cars (and that's all tabs are, an annual tax). Most states base the tab fee on the value of the car. MN used to basically charge sales tax every year on the cars "blue book" value. One of the good thing Jesse Ventura did while in office was change that.

We get both.. full book taxing each year and every other year about $150 for plates.

just seems odd that my dad's 2001 dodge ram pickup would be half as much as my 1995 bonneville. i know the value of my car is a LOT less then that truck. hmm... interisting. :evil:

tax and licensing on my 00 was $400+

It depends on value when the car was brand new.

Look at the title for each car. On it you'll see a "classification." The first two numbers of the classification represent the price of the car in thousands. So, 23XXXXXXX would be a $23,000 car when brand new.

That value is what your annual registration cost is derived from. I'm willing to bet the cost of your dad's truck, when new, is less than that of the Bonnie. The state does not reduce that number over time. It stays the same for the life of the car. The only thing that might change would be the multiplier, but that would affect all registered cars.

BTW, I'm positive this is how Michigan does it....not sure about other states.

For what it's worth, our 99 costs my $95 annually. Firehawk is $138. But our 79 TA is only $37.

My 00 truck is still close to $500 annually.

My bonne is 140 every yr, the GTP when I had it, was 130ish. Blazer was 96.

Bonne = 02
GTP = 00
Blazer = 95

I know that when I got my car tax and licenseing were about 300. Plus having to buy new stickers to put on my car every year which is 50-60 I think I always forget and am surprised when I have to buy them again.
