Syracuse, NY?

I know we have some club members there (popatim for one)

I am thrilled with the job I have, but, out of the blue, I was contacted by an employer up there that would be a perfect fit for my skills.

So...

What can you guys tell me about Syracuse?

What do you love about it?

What do you hate about it?

Also, anyone who has visited there: any opinions?

I think the Fake Canadian also lives in Syracuse. My dad went to SU and he loved it, I'll ask him more about it if you'd like

Jim W 09-28-2007 08:44 AM

Ya, Pete's parents live there, he went to SU as well.

I really like the downtown area of Syracuse.

Well out of the whole up state area.. everyone call it a Dump... More crime, and really Run down. compared to Rochester, Buffalo, Albany, and other citys around here.

If it was me... I would never move there. I dont even like to Drive through there.

Jim W 09-28-2007 08:55 AM

Really? I never got that sensation in downtown Syracuse, there was one rough area in East Syr where Petes parents live, apparently his uncle has/had a bakery in that area.

But the downtown proper of Syracuse seemed ok to me.

Did they ever give you back your exhaust tips last time you drove through there Jim?

Well, I can't say badnit is 100% right.

As far as economy, it is behind rochester, but it isn't bad. For crime, Rochester technically has the highest murder rate per capita in the state. Other crime is probably on par.

That being said, I grew up in Binghamton (hour south) went to school in Rochester (hour west) and had a bunch of good friends at Syracuse. It a nice city. It does have it's share of crime, unemployment, and below average income areas, but as a whole it is a good city. The downtown area is nice and being revitalized slowly.

Also, if you like skiing, there are a couple places around to go within an hour. There are a couple nice fresh water beaches near by, as well as the fingerlakes wine region.

You have Niagara falls within 2.5 hours, albany within 2.5 hrs, If you like to camp there is the adirondaks about an hour to 2 away. NYC is 4.5 hours away, boston is about the same. Boosty's is 3.5.

It's a good place. I would have to say I like Binghamton and Rochester better than it, but that doesn't mean much as they are fairly close.

If the job is right, I'd say go for it. There are plenty of us that enjoy getting together.

Excellent feedback so far, thanks!

Suppose I can draw a parallel here (hopefully). Right now I live in a "bedroom community" (Wentzville), which is about 45 miles west of St. Louis. But if people ask I am from St. Louis

Are there any surrounding bedroom communities in Syracuse, i.e. "the burbs"? And has anyone seen then or lived in them?

Can anyone comment on the climate? I hear it is cold there!

JimmyFloyd 09-29-2007 10:12 AM

Climate, yes, they do have a good winter. They tend to get a lot of lake effect snow since they have Conecious lake next to the city, and lake ontario just to the north. The summers aren't too bad, and the winters vary. You will probably want a good set of snows just cause there are hills there. They also use salt on the road, so washing the car often helps reduce rust.

As for bedroom communities, if you are looking within 45 minutes like before, then yes, I believe there would be. Cortland, Geneva, and Utic are all within 45 minutes and are pretty nice. Tully, onondaga hill, and auburn are nice as well. never lived there, but driven through and spent time for events/work there.

Popatim might be able to give you better feedback as he lives there.

I have family in Liverpool.

I've been in that area and driven through 'cuse many times and never felt unsafe or anything. I've found that liverpool was a really nice community. Only like 2 exits from downtown too. I've stayed there days and have never been worried about the stuff in my car or if I am safe at night.

If you are looking to buy a house in that area let me know, I belive my uncle is/works for a reality firm and he's a cool guy.
