John,
The hardest part isn't starting a program, it is sticking to it. You have taken the first steps--now you need to keep it up! Good job in making that first committment. It won't hurt after about the fifth time...but you'll still be winded.
I am 5'9" and 175 lbs., I could stand to loose a few too, but I haven't taken that first step. I used to run a pultry three miles per day--now I could probably only do two.

John, it'* GREAT that you're getting into shape, but I warn you, you are about at a normal weight. Besides, I LIKE fluff. And i HATE six packs...no guys, i'm not kidding.
I am heavier than people think I am, people always guess about 40 lbs less than I weigh. Besides, it'* personality that counts. I LIKE my fluff, i LIKE my grey hairs, and i LIKE my weird personality I am 5'8" and 185 pounds (i just lost 10 lbs) and NOT ashamed of it at all. Even my doctor says that I'm not overweight, it'* just how I'm shaped. Not to mention the beneficial curves that come with it
Also, be forewarned...when you get muscles, you'll tone up, but muscle weighs MORE than fluff. And you can still run the mile faster than me I'm an out of shape asthmatic.
Good luck, and keep us posted!!!
