Unless the system you installed xp on, was EXACTLY the same as the system you are putting the hdd in, no. It'll never work, unless you put install the drivers for YOUR hardware, not some other machine'* hardware. If you'd like a little more help you can PM or IM me, i'd be glad to help.

mmm...I dunno if that'll really be an issue. I mean think about it, you can replace your motherboard, video card, install another HD and new speakers and keep your original HD and it'll still boot and find the new hardware. I know this because I did it about 4months ago. I'm running Win2k

It might just have to set itself up with the new hardware. I've actually never tried it.

Win2k is different, but I have replaced my mobo, sound card, video card, and a new NIC, but it rejected it. Its a risk, and xp only allows a certain number of hardware changes.. and I don't think its more than 10. I'd just autoclave the hdd, and reinstall xp [or some other OS, its up to you], and all will be well.

As long as the HD controller is the same type (SCSI or IDE) as the machine the clean install was done on, xp should boot, find all the hardware changes, and apply drivers that it can. Once that is done you will probably have to reregister XP with microsoft as the hardware is bound to be different then the machine the install was done on. Once thats done you can load the drivers xp coudnt install itself (recent hardware will most likely need drivers xp did not have).

It is type specific. You can change a motherboard, OR a NIC, OR a video card, but if you do more than one at a time or the motherboard has a lot of onboard stuff (sound, nic, video) then you will trigger the activiation code requirement and be required to reregister which is no big deal as long as you own the copy of xp. You do own it right?

BTW if you want to avoid all this, and you have internet access, try going to www.ravantivirus.com this will do a virus scan over the web and may remove or identify your infection. If it identifies it, check out www.sarc.com and check for an infection specific removal tool.
