Signature and Image sizes

I'm fairly new here so please excuse me if you find this to be too forward. I visit quite a few boards - even run a couple - and one thing that really strikes me at Bonneville Club is the size of the signatures and images in them.

I have a 19" monitor and sometimes I cannot even see any lines in a thread at all - the only thing filling the screen are GIANT signatures and images. I'm wearing out my wheel mouse scrolling through threads just to find a line to read.

Also, since using a computer is part of my job, I like to brouse through during the day if I have a moment. Unfortunately that's not necessarily a good idea with all the imagery going on in some posts.

I'm not trying to stir the pot, rather, it would be nice to have a civilised discussion on whether there should be some sort of standards as far as sizing of signatures and what can be put in them.

If we were able to have some concensus on this with a view to reducing the clutter, I'm sure everyone would have a better browsing experience at BC.

Your comments would be interesting!

Jim has said that sig images should be no larger than 300*500 before, I guess some people just need a reminder (me, mine was like 500 square...) and maybe if a few people (russel) could pull out their 20 line wishlist....

Hey admin's, Do ya think maybe a 512b limit would help? www.txkautox.com uses 255b and that's just too small, my mods for just the 93 barely fit...

Rogue 03-24-2004 08:22 PM

Your running a 19" monitor? What screen resolution (please say nothing less than 1280X1024).

sse1990 03-24-2004 08:23 PM

I was about to say the same thing AGAIN.

Just because they said the image size could not be bigger than said size doesn't mean you can put 2 of them in your sig.

Mine is meting the size requirements but I can reduce it no problem if the size limits change which I think they really should.

I am often on dial up while out of town now and I DO NOT VISIT BC during the week because it takes almost 5 minutes to load most posts because of it.

I know you have an option to remove the pictures from posts but I think the time has come to reduce the size once again.

AND

if the size is bigger than said size the admins should be allowed to go in and remove said picture from signature, they do have access as I run a forum or 2 myself.

Jim W 03-24-2004 08:27 PM

Agreed. We have repeated this many times.

Especially for our dial up friends. I will move this to the Lounge as a Sticky.

I am giving the members 3 days to read the request and revise the sig. Take the sigs that the admins and mods have as you measuring tool. 1 image of max 500x300 pixels or 2 images like mine below.

This is very important, please adhere to my request.

Thank you

Maybe we shoudl find a way where when we sign in we have the option to disable pics so it comes out only in text, and if we want to view something in particular we can enable it during work so our bosses that walk by won't by giving us Poopits for not working while we're post whoring here.

It's built in to Explorer...

But limits are good. Hopefully some one will let me know if mine needs adjusted

AD Bear 03-25-2004 12:17 AM

Well before ya'll go deleting said pic. We should first see if said
members are aware of the limits, knowledgeable and how to
add or if need be adjust a pic to meet the 500x300 limit.
When I first joined BC I didn't know how to add anything to a
forum, Pic or whatever. Everything I'm able to do on this or any
forum I learned from BC members. And in showing me how to add
a sig pic I was not advised of a pic limit. Now I think a limit is a
good idea but I think we can handle this in a better way. In Jan 04
a member PM me regarding my sig. Asking me to srink my sig pic due
to members using 56k. Well I still don't know how to srink a pic and
I use 56k. It's not that bad on dial up because I love this place and
if it took an hour to load up I'll still be here, just wouldn't post much..... :D

sse1990 03-25-2004 12:29 AM

If you ever want a pic rezied let me knwo and I can do it for you.

When I am on the road though I have crappy speed at about 28,8 due to the hotel lines and if I have to wait too long for it to load I will close it or be asleep, lol.

Ahh! So I'm not the only one who has noticed this? Pardon the rant but this drives me nuts! Especially when people post multiple times within the same thread and we have to scroll through their crappy, pixelated pics multiple times! And while we're on the topic of sigs, I know it's policy here to post your car info in your sig but this also seems like a waste of space to me. This kind of info can easily be stored in a profile area. Putting all of that info in each sig pretty much renders the "search" function all but useless. Each time I search for terms all I get is the term listed in 50 different sigs! My 2 pesos. Rant off.

BonneMeMN 03-25-2004 06:32 PM

But if we're trying to diagnose a problem, a sig is an effective way of checking easy.

I am working on a new one though....

True. And I know that's why it was requested awhile back that everyone include that info in their sig. But the other 90% of the time that sig info just adds to visual clutter, takes up disk space, and neuters the search function. Okay...I mostly visit the lounge where there isn't much car trouble diagnosis happening so maybe the percentage isn't 90%. But it's gotta be up there.

aviator327 03-25-2004 06:44 PM

Just my 2 cents but putting your car info in your signature is helpfull to the staff and other BC members as a quick reference if your car is stock, and mods you may made incase a problem arises and you are looking for assistance.

Jim W 03-25-2004 07:24 PM

Ryan I fixed your sig

Everyone

Another reminder, I will be editing signatures that do not comply to the following

1 image of 500x350 MAX
2 images not exceeding 250x200, see my sig as an example
Mod list not exceeding 8-10 lines of characters.

Any questions, post here or send me a PM. Please don't be alarmed if you sig is revised.

animated gif images are acceptable (limit of 3 please)

This should satisfy the requests and not bog down on dialup users.

Frankly, I like sigs and pics, it makes things a bit more interesting and colorful, we just have to be mindful and responsible with our signatures

Thx 8)

sse1990 03-25-2004 08:07 PM

It was not the sigs we are talking about it is the pictures inserted into the sigs that are the problem.

I think that the info in the sig IS very important but some pictures were getting out of hand.

Jim W 03-25-2004 08:12 PM

Thats true Mike, but line after line of text gets cumbersome

8-10 lines is a reasonable request

That's what I run at home most of the time but depends on the kind of work I'm doing. Despite that, and the 132 or so views of this thread, there are still quite a few oversized signatures around. I'd be happy to post a screen shot - but I'll hold off on that.

Cheers,

Jim W 03-25-2004 09:05 PM

Foghorn

This thread has exactly what I want to see in sig limitations, most are within respectable limits. I wil not be forcing people to remove their signatures or images, but to respect limits. PMs and modified sigs will follow to meet the minority requests on this item.

I'm sure you are aware of the Windows IE option to not show images on webpages. I suggest using that if you do not want to view images

No worries Jim, didn't want people to have to remove images...only to keep them a reasonable size!

Cheers,

Jim W 03-25-2004 09:12 PM

I realize that, my apologies if I came off harsh, its your concerns that will ensure this item gets resolved. :)

I suppose even I can stand to reduce the sig size overall. I'll condense mine a bit when I upgrade to the new sig pic ;)

AD Bear 03-25-2004 11:25 PM

I hope this hasn't discouraged members from posting
a sig pic. Because I think that's one of the things that
makes this forum different from all the rest.

Sometimes I think I login just to see the sig pic's, just
to view The Beauty That Is Bonneville!

Jim W 03-25-2004 11:35 PM

Pics wil stay and your size is perfect for what we want from now on :D

BonneMeMN 03-25-2004 11:40 PM

I hope mines ok.... If it aint, just try and stop me.

I've got like 5 characters left available..... :?

Jim W 03-27-2004 04:36 PM

This is my final request for sigs to be modified to suit the new limits.

Tonight, if sigs are not reduced to:

10 lines of character MAX
1 image of 500x300
2 images of 250x200

I will be editing them.

MOS95B 03-28-2004 12:26 AM

Dangit. Mine was too big (again) http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...es/naughty.gif

BonneMeMN 03-28-2004 12:34 AM

I think as long as you don't stretch out an 800x600 browser, and are under say 40k you're good to go. But the height thing is an issue.

Jim W 03-28-2004 11:05 AM

John, at 18kB your image is ok, I'll let it ride, I need a laugh or two once in a while.

Its a balance here people, drop me a PM if you have sig questions please. I know I have been kinda hard-azz about this, but it is an important issue.

Jim W 03-28-2004 04:23 PM

I have noticed that the sigs are getting better.

Many thanks to all members that co-operated. However, please be aware that if an admin modifies your sig, do not be alarmed. It will only be changed to alter a picture size. Or you will be PM'ed

Thanks everyone!

Jim W 04-04-2004 10:28 PM

Just a bump so that you fellas dont freak out if your sig pic sizes change.

If you have any questions please remember

1. 1 image 500x250
2. 2 images 250x200 max
3. 10 lines of characters as your mod list

Thanks for all your help folks

MOS95B 04-05-2004 12:43 AM

Um, if I could....

It's not a problem for me, since the slowest I go is cable at home, but some seemingly small animations are bigger than a big JPG. Just a point I thought I'd bring up, not a complaint....

Jim W 04-05-2004 01:00 AM

Any gifs you can think of that present a problem?

The only two I can think of is Jeanies ladybug dealie and Boats 1/64 Fast and Furious

MOS95B 04-05-2004 01:02 AM

Soory, like I said, none of them are a problem for me (T3 or better here, cable at home). You'll have to get 56k opinions on that one. I just figured I'd break the ice as it were, in case it was a problem for them

Tha ladybug is kinda freaky tho, since I use a large screen resolution and got bad eyes. "What's with the red dot?? Oh......"

Jim W 04-05-2004 01:03 AM

I'll field the complaints if they arise, thanks for the ice breaker, but members arent shy with me so anyone with a problem just let me know
