Default In the City I work in....

The City I work in is Marshall, Michigan. Marshall is a historical town in Michigan that is home to many antique shops, and homes. Its downtown district is especially popular for out of staters because of its shops. The thing that surprises me are how politically correct the city officials are. Two years ago there was a huge fuss about the high school football'* team name which was redskins. After more than a year of protesting on both sides of the argument, the school was forced to change its name to "Marshall RedHawks." This cost the town thousands of dollars because everything in the school had to be changed like uniforms, banners, the football field itself, etc. The newest addition was the "beaners coffee shop" which is right next door to where I work. They were sued and forced to change their name too. The new name is "BIGGBY Coffee." Beaners coffee is probably around the nation in other chains, etc, but in this one town it was forced to change its name. Call me naive, but I never even thought to think of these two names as offensive or derogatory in anyway. I just don't think like that. I seriously only thought of coffee "beans" when I heard the name beaners, I never thought of it as derogatory towards a certain ethnic group. Do you think this town is out of line?

sometimes when people are offended, they just need to lighten up and let it go. i think both examples you provided are cases, where they are just thinking about the names more than they need to. dont over analyze it. dont the city officials have anything better to do?

I forgot to add initially that the high school has had this name for more than 60 years.. It has just now became a fuss these last few years and the name force-changed.

Beaners was forced to change it'* name nation wide so that didn't come just for Marshall. They will be changing all over in the next year. I agree with you on the high school name, it should have been left alone.

Ah. I didn't know about that. I just know I heard talk about some complaining about the name locally. I'm surprised it'* a nation-wide thing.

We had the same here with the Marquette Warriors college basketball team. They were forced to change their name. They are now the Marquette Golden Eagles.
