I had a guy come up to me at work and ask if I could install a deck in his truck. I asked if he would be hanging out around the store or if he would be taking off. He said he would probably need to stay because the state put a breathalyzer in his truck. So he has to blow every time he wants to start his truck. This is the first time I have ever heard of such a thing. Has anyone else seen/ heard of it?

I've heard of them, but never knew anyone who actually had one. That'* kinda funny. Definite sign that someone has had some "beverage issues" in the past.

That is one of the things they do up here now, if you get caught even once for blowing over the limit, .08 I think, you get hammered with higher insurance than a reclace driving ticket, I think it goes up by x4, along with possible vehicle impoundment, loss of license, you have to take some kind of course PLUS they install a vehicle interlock system, wich if anyone wants to use the vehicle, you have to blow into the tester. Also I have seen that they have this amber light installed on the front of the car. So when you are driving, you can tell it is a car with that system in it, and that the person was caught for drinking and driving.

I think that it may end up coming stock on cars in the future. I know people are gonna bitch about their privacy rights and all that BS, and they say they never drink and drive and blah...blah...blah... But it only takes once to do it and they end up killing someone. Like they say, driving is a privilege, not a right. So the privilege just got more of a hassle. People can complain all they want but it just may end up being a fact of life. Who knows how many people it will save.

I really don't agree with the article because if you think about how many short trips you would take... on a bad day, I make roughly 6-10 one way trips in a day. I wouldn't want to have to get it, blow it, start the car, drive the block and a half to the store, buy milk, get it, blow again, start the car and drive home... just seems silly. Then there is the issue of letting people borrow your car. I would be hard cause they would either have to use your Breathalyzer, or have some way of hooking an alternate up to it.

I feel that they should only be used if you have a previous conviction, and if they want to increase the impact, then they should put them on all vehicles in the household the person is living so they can't just take another car and the people living with them will get on the person to straighten up.

If they ever decide to make it stock on production cars, then anyone and everyone will have to get used to using them. Even if someone wants to borrow the vehicle. As it is with the cars that do have them on, there is no way to disconnect them and anyone that does want to use it does have to blow into the unit to start the car.


Hmmm if people only have to go a block or so and back, then maybe people will start walking or taking alternate transport for the one block trip..

I know what you are saying though, I travel everyday, I spend about as much time a day driving to my clients as I do at them.

I hope it never does become stock on production cars, BUT if people keep drinking and driving and killing people while doing it well, it only takes the "right" person getting killed in an accident for it to become law on all vehicles, it'* one of those things that you never know.

I really doubt it will become common place. Sounds a lot like when they tried to make it where cars wouldn't start if your seatbelt wasn't fastened. That lasted like one year model before it got shot down.
