Reliability of 3.0L Toyota Engines
Can anyone speak about the reliablity of these engines? I know they are notorious for having head gaskets blow. I've found a '93 Toyota 4x4 truck (149K miles) with the 3.0L V-6 in great shape cosmetically and am curious if the factory recall for the head gaskets fixed the problem. I recall reading reports of them blowing multiple times even after Toyota'* fix. It would make a cool second vehicle to tinker with if I had confidence in the engine. Has a factory sunroof, premium alloys and a 'clutch cancel' switch so you can start it in gear.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Overall Toyota has extremely reliable engines. I used to sell Toyotas and it was not uncommon to see camarys come through with over 300K miles on them and still running perfectly. I personaly own a Tercel now with 182K on it and have never had a problem. It is getting old and burns a little oil, but overall the thing still gets 40 MPG with a four speed manual. Toyota trucks are highly dependable. The four-runner is one of the highest re-selling vehicles out there becuase they just keep going and going. Same 3.0 engine in the older ones. I have my eye on one too.

the hg worry is covered 100% by the dealer. no age or mile limit. so if it happens, it will be an inconvience to not have it, but @ least it would be covered.

I'd really like to get serious about this one as it is super clean and loaded with power locks and windows, rear slider, etc. but I'm wondering if I would'nt be better off to find a 1996 or newer as they have the more reliable 3.4L V-6.
I'll give the dealer a shout tomorrow and see if he can't shed some light on whether or not this one has been fixed...or better yet, get the previous owner'* phone number.
The truck is identical to this one...

my mom has a 91 or 92, i dont remember. she got a notice on a recall for some steering linkage problem in the mail. the truck was sitting dead bc of the hg. she called the dealer to see if the was by chance a recall on the hg. an sure enough, there was. they said there was no mileage or time exclusion. all she had to do was just get it there. she got it back just a couple of weeks ago.

I dunno if this helps at all as I'm not completely familiar with the older engines even though I sell Toyotas....But a customer of ours with a 98 Tacoma with 189,000 miles sold her truck private party for $3800! That'* unheard of with a GM car!!! Though to Gm'* credit, my dad has a 1989 Chevy pickup with 200,000 miles and still runs!!! I may buy if off him if he wants to get rid of it!
Edit: I do know the 3.0 V6 in the older Camrys are very good and last!
