Nothing really freaky about it

Using some basic algebra where X is the first 3 digits of your phone number and Y is the last 4

( ( (X*80) + 1 ) * 250 ) + Y + Y - 250) /2

Which can simplify to
(20000*X + 250 + 2Y - 250) /2

Which simplifies to
(20000*X + 2Y) /2

Which is eqivalent to
10000*X + Y

So if you scale the first 3 digits of your phone number by 1000 and add the last 3 digits, you get the same thing

LOL, can you tell I spent 10 1/2 hours doing engineering work today? I didn't even have to THINK about this, it became a reflex. I think I need a vacation

Who needs mathematicians when you have engineers, right? "close enough" LOL

jeez, i'm in some hard core classes at the university of florida, and it would've taken me QUITE some time to figure that out.

Whoops, I read over this again, and realized that my final statement should have said "if you scale the first 3 digits of your phone number by 10,000" (not 1000). Sorry, I goofed!

yeah, my wife looked at a similar one (using the year you're born) and was shocked...

so I did the same thing - I took her through the math of the whole thing, and she just looked at me. you know, that look that engineers get all the time from people who aren't, after we've described something that they don't understand?

that look.
