Yeah that'* an old one..

Always properly wire up your aftermarket accessories. If you don't know how to hook it up, learn, or pay someone else to do it.

Definitely a sad thing to see a car go up in flames. Sad thing is it may have been a common VW electrical problem. I know the owner of a VW & Audi repair shop, and he said ALOT of VWs and Audi'* are sadly plagued with electrical problems. He'* even had a Audi go up in flames when they were working on it. :( The newer Vdubs and Audis have definitely been improved.

IIRC it was a boost controller or a gauge wiring. VAG "classic" electrical problems are just things not working, not catching on fire like damn near any ford from the 00-04 era, or the L67 fuel rail problems, fiero'* etc..
