That doesn't mean the animal is drawing itself. It'* producing an action or behavior that exhibits a positive response. The elephant has no idea what it'* doing or the significance of the drawing, it just doesn't have the brain function. Their brains aren't capable of ever learning that, the mechanisms and structures just aren't there for that sort of higher order functioning.

Think of this as a rat in a maze. Except instead of navigating a maze, the elephant has to produce lines to get to the goal. It only takes a while to learn.

calm down sparky. you should realize that most people know that. its actually marginally insulting that you seem to assume that people on this forum DONT recognize that fact.

anyone whos had even an introduction to psychology will come to that same conclusion. but theres something to be said for taking it at face value. living in the world is sometimes better than analyzing it for some people. you cheapen their experiences by trying to pretend to be so much smarter than everyone here.

Jeez, I wasn't trying to be such a kill joy. I think that the reason why the animal does it is really interesting, as well (if not more interesting than a mysterious zoo where all the elephants are somehow able to paint one image). Thanks for the patronizing comment, though. I'll make sure to keep my thoughts, opinions, and analyses out of a public forum for fear of being a kill joy. I'll take my introduction to psychology knowledge elsewhere.
