That doesn't mean the animal is drawing itself. It'* producing an action or behavior that exhibits a positive response. The elephant has no idea what it'* doing or the significance of the drawing, it just doesn't have the brain function. Their brains aren't capable of ever learning that, the mechanisms and structures just aren't there for that sort of higher order functioning.
Think of this as a rat in a maze. Except instead of navigating a maze, the elephant has to produce lines to get to the goal. It only takes a while to learn.

anyone whos had even an introduction to psychology will come to that same conclusion. but theres something to be said for taking it at face value. living in the world is sometimes better than analyzing it for some people. you cheapen their experiences by trying to pretend to be so much smarter than everyone here.
