Default Computer help please...

Well, my 5 year old laptop is on its last legs. The hard drive starts randomly clicking and grinding and then shuts down. It'* kind of hit or miss when it happens...

But this thing doesn't owe me a dime, it'* been really good in the time I've had it (it'* an old Toshiba Satellite)...

So, on to a new laptop, and I would like some help picking one since there are so many choices out there. Right now, I use this one for email, internet, music, some minor photoshopping, the occasional movie, and school work (long, rambling word docs). My number one complaint would be that it gets super sluggish when I run multiple programs, so I guess memory is important.

Portability is somewhat important, but I don't really want one of those tiny little things with an 11 inch screen, prefer a 15 or 14 inch screen.

Any suggestions? Need any more info?

Just my opinion, but if you are looking for reliability, go for another Toshiba Satellite. I have had many older ones, and they have always ran in tip-top shape. Obviously go for good brands such as IBM, HP, Alienware, and if you know Apples, go with a lappy from them. Since most new laptops will come with Vista, get at least 1GB of ram, and make sure it is NOT shared with video, as the video may suck up 64-128MB of that 1GB.

Yeah Toshiba has defo done me right in the past. I would love a Mac but I think they are out of my price range.

Other problem is I'm in Germany and the keyboards are different here, so I need to order and get it shipped from NA. Anyone have any experience buying a comp off eBay?

Yeah, I'm enjoying my new Toshiba Satellite A135-S4407, its quite a nice machine. Definitely reliable, my last one, a Satellite M45-S265 was also excellent and lasted up until the day it met a cat and a glass of water. I had that since Aug 2005 up until Feb 2007, never gave me any serious problems, now this once since March '07 and is still tickin along. Definitely recommend Toshiba

I'll throw Gateway name into the mix. I have a Gateway MX7533 and I love it. It has been reliable and it can run multiple things without slowing down. Other people I know who have owned Gateways have been satisfied with them, which is one reason I bought one. I also love their tech support and the fact it'* based in the US and you talk to actual American people over phone (Texas I believe)

i vote toshiba. Very reliable.

I have one tecra from 1998 still running strong

and just got a tecra in 2004 and it is still cranking and i ABUSE that thing on a daily basis.

It has hit the windshield from the back seat on at least 2 occasions and still works great!
