People blowing by me on the interstate...*rant*

***DISCLAIMER*** I realize that slowing down on the interstate in a metro area is dangerous, so please keep with the flow of traffic.

...can't help but laugh at them. I have been driving at 55mph on the interstate when going between towns. Now, if you've ever been to Kansas, there's nothing here...not even hills. So I average about 36mpg on the flat track.

But, as I'm driving along, I'm getting passed up by everyone else going 80. I bet these are the same people that complain about gas prices, yet are doing little to nothing about it. The interstates here are light traffic, and there's no reason whatsoever to go that fast.

I'd think that if they were seriously concerned about the gas prices, they'd slow down whenever possible, otherwise they have no room at all to complain, imho.

When you get passed by the hybrids..then it's time to increase the speed a little.

you're totally right TWM. There's a lot you can do to get better mileage. driving slower is definately one of them. in the SSEi at 55 MPH you get around 37 MPG instant. at around 80 it drops to around 28.

Twister97 09-02-2005 12:37 PM

I used to be one of those (80mph) guys when I lived there. Nothing beats the Kansas Interstate, thats for sure

JimmyFloyd 09-02-2005 01:05 PM

yeah, most cars are still tuned to me most efficient around 55mph because that is what most of the nation's speed limits were set on interstates.

i should slow down on the highways, but i have a 200 mile drive each way once a week, at 80 i do it in 3 hours, at 55 it would be almost 4, i probably could stand to slow it down just be a 45min-1hr difference, but it just feels so slow...

Do wat I do.. follow another slow ass and so you can always blame the guy driving slow in front of you ;) and other motorist won't be that mad @ you as I"m sure they will see another vehicle in front of you going that slow :P :D

do 65mph. wont feel that slow, lol

All I can say is America is a bunch of cry babies.

Same people complaining about gas are the ones speeding in Ford Expeditions.

Sometimes I almost want gas to hit $4 a gallon so people will start trading in SUV's and I can actually look over a car to see if my left is clear.

I go 65 all the time.Feels kind of slow but I get 30 MPG.

55 may be the most economical, but going 75-80 isn't gonna hurt me too much ... and I'll get places faster.

If I drove 55 on the freeways in Detroit I'd be run off the road. I-696 is a minimum 80mph in some places during rush hour.
