My Motorola V505 is a 56k modem also. On the road, I can use it with my laptop for internet access.

Considering NetZero unlimited for $9.95 a month. Anyone do anything similar to this? Comments or advice?

I have the cable and Mobile Phone Tools software from Motorola. That part I've used for synching with my calendar at work (outlook). I have everything I need but the ISP.

All dialup is 56k these days. That'* what NetZero is. Not bad, unlimited DL for 10 bucks a month, especially when I have free minutes to use on my cell. Unlimited evenings and weekends.

Dame, now that your Dad has it working, how does he like it? Suit his needs? Speed? What ISP?

56k CAPABLE. It'* affected by everything. Humidity, corrosion on junction connections, you name it. But with a digital cellyphone.....and a GSM data connection, I should be pretty quick.

I use the Verizon Wireless Highspeed Data through my phone. My boss bought the plan and the cable for me. It works great. We were using it from Rochester to long Island the entire way and we were getting between 80k-160k depending on the area. Was really nice because my boss was able to do a lot of work on the drive down (I unfortunately was elected to drive) I have never used anything else though. Verizon'* plan is a little pricey for the average user, but the speed might make up for that for someone who is on the road a lot.

Bill, you won't need a separate dial-up service with your wireless internet. You should receive software that directly connects to the wireless provider. I've been in the wireless industry for 16 years now and have seen this service blossum into something that is actually useable.

Cingular (and their affiliates) now has GSM service which uses GPRS and the even quicker EDGE wireless data platforms. Verizon and other CDMA providers have "Express Network" which is equally as fast. My experience with the speed was better than my dial-up service at home. As a matter of fact, that'* what I used for about 8 months in lieu of a standard ISP. I'v always had a company provided phone with all the goodies.

I called customer service today, and was told they have no capability to act as an ISP. What gives?

Cingular'* unlimited service is $75/mo I believe. They also have other plans that go by MB. For instance, $20 = 5MB. A quick BC session for you would blow through that pretty quick.

Back in the day, phones that dialed directly into a third party ISP worked on Circuit Switched Data which was a blazing 14.4k. I'm not sure if this would be the same for you since you are not using your wireless provider as an ISP.
