Opinion of a 1995 pontiac grand prix GTP
 

Anyone know anything about this car or have ever had one? i was looking into purcahsing one for my brother. I figured i would ask you guys if they have any known problems(are their gaskets plenum?) and if it would be worth the 1k the guy wants for it.Or if anyone has any other information i should know prior to looking that this car.

I plan on seeing it tomorrow morning.

Isn't that the 3.1 motor? Gasket issues etc. Not fun to work on... Where's Echo? he's done some work on one.

Actually it's a super charged 3.4

From the reviews i have seen on www.carsurvey.org most people seem to like em.
My buddy did have a (i believe to be) '92 grand prix GTP. That had a charged 3.1 in it (or was it 3.2?) He said it was a fun while he had it but it was slowly giving up the ghost until it finally died... On graduation day!

3.1 = NO fun to work on. Says it is a 3.4 DOHC, though. Not much experience with that one. Supercharged? Not from the factory, they weren't from what I know.

just because its a GTP does not mean its supercharged. that started in 97.
some of the older 3.1's were turbo's...

if its the 3.4 DOHC, stay away, the motor is not a reliable one.

I just sold my lumina with the same motor and it went bad in the 100 miles he owned it. the timing belt probably broke, as that is a known problem with them.

Oh i thought all GTP's were charged. well that is the suck eh? learn something new everyday i guess. I heard they have a problem with the aluminum heads, when the engine first starts up. goes from 1k RPM to 4k and back to 1k. That is until the head expands and whatever leak was present seals up.
the ad says recent engine and trans change w 45k on the engine and trans. when i called him up he said the original owner (a teenager i believe) over revved the first engine. He had in the "drag mode", and planted the gas pedal. That alone got me thinkin'. How did he over rev it? isn't there a rev limiter in place? can the engine not take it? I was flush with uncertainty so i took my curiosity to the best place i know. :D
and it is the 3.4L dual overhead cam engine.
now there was a 1992 bonneville SSEI for 1,500.......hmmmmmmm. and that 1984 Porsche 944 for 1,500. I have ALWAYS wanted a 944. But VERY expensive to keep running. :cry:

Ok... well do ya want my opinion the 3.4 DOHC? I'll just flat out say that they are garbage. They are notorious for head gaskets (Sometimes the heads crack, and when they do they are expensive), and for some reason, the 60* bottom ends CANNOT handle getting coolant in the oil. If the timing belt snaps, you are screwed. It is a interference engine, and will bend many valves, and destroy pistons. The head gasket job alone will make you go nuts. Changing the alternator on one will make you go crazy, and they are also notorious for leaking at the cap that blocks off the distributor hole. Other than that, they are pretty impressive, I've seen slightly modded ones keep up with SHOs.

How do I know all of this? I was heavily into the 60* V6's before I bought my first Bonne. Then I found that the 90* V6 was a MUCH better engine by far, so I lost interest in the 60* V6s.
